TV & Internet in Accra

Tools:

Satellite TV

Most expats will opt for satellite TV, as it offers a far better range of local and international programs for reasonable prices. Multi-choice provides DSTV to Ghana, which offers a wide range of international channels. Monthly prices range from GHS 40 to GHS 330.

Internet

Ghana was one of the first African countries to introduce the internet. Today, it is widely available through service providers and through mobile phones. A few urban locations operate on 3G networks but 2G is more widespread.

Accessing the internet over the cell phone network is arguably the easiest and quickest option. It is possible to use your phone as a base, off which you can tether other devices.

To have a permanent line in your house, you will first need to make sure that it is possible to have internet at your location. Rural areas, for example, are more difficult to service. Assuming you can get service, you will then need to provide a local service provider with the following in order to sign a contract.

  • Identification
  • A resident's permit
  • A residential billing address
  • A bank statement

Time frames for installation vary greatly based on the company. Enquire with them for better estimates.

Providers

Internet service providers in Ghana include:

Internet Café

Internet cafes are located readily throughout Accra. Some of the primary cafes include:

  • Busy Internet - located on Ring Road Central, and acts as a full-service business center
  • Vodaphone - Usually provides in-house internet cafes

Price per hour depends on the café. The listed cafes tend to offer a nicer environment and higher speed internet, making them more expensive. Cheaper cafes are found randomly on street corners throughout the city.

WiFi

WiFi is not readily available in Accra.

Generally, you can find it either at larger hotels or through the BusyInternet wireless hotspots (airport, Accra Mall, Medical Hospital).
