Mail, Post office in Accra

Sending Mail

To send mail, you can use either the national postal system (Ghana Post or Ghana Post Expedited Mail Service) or a private courier like FedEx. The later is much faster and more secure, but also more expensive. Pricing details can be calculated online with both companies.

Receiving Mail

To receive mail, you will need to register for a PO Box with a local post office. Rental fees for personal and professional boxes can be found on the Ghana Post website.

If you're receiving a package through the national postal system, a notice will be delivered to your PO Box and you can then use that to pick up your package. Be warned that the pick up process can be complicated. Often, processing is extremely slow and mail theft can be a problem. When you do receive a package, it will be subject to inspection by a customs officer who will apply a duty to your goods. Although rules are in place for how this should be done, bribes and excessive charges are a reported problem.

Keeping Mail Safe

Whether you are receiving or sending packages and mail, it is wise to follow these guidelines for keeping your belongings safe.

  • Use a private courier rather than the national postal service. This allows you to bypass customs inspections and is often faster and more reliable.
  • Get a tracking number so you can keep a rough idea on the whereabouts and expected delivery date of your package.
  • When receiving mail, be cautious on the value the sender writes on the package. Often, customs officers will use this to declare duties - so lower amounts are often better.
  • Do not ship valuables through the national postal service.
  • Work within your local expat network and the Easy Expat forum to find people traveling from your home country to Ghana that might be willing to bring items to you.
