    Hi everyone!

I am a German and Canadian dual citizen who has been living in Singapore for the past three years due to my employment. Now as my employment contract ends next year I am planning to move to the UK with my wife who is a Canadian and Japanese dual citizen. I understand it that due to my German passport I will be able to take up employment etc. in the UK and my wife will be able to join me. I got all the information I need about the EEA family permit from the British High Commission here and I know what I have to do to get it etc.

However my question lies a bit more in detail. I know that within the six months after issue of the family permit I will have to apply for a residence permit EEA1 in order for my wife to be able to get one as well in order to be able to stay for good. As however I am not planning to work anymore and will only be living there to "enjoy life" with my wife I will not be taking up any employment and neither will she as we have enough to live on. Please do note that we are not retired in any way: we are economically self sufficient and our savings and assets will be absolutely sufficient when applying for the residence permit. What I do not know however is what kind of health insurance is needed for a residence permit based on economic self sufficiency.

So does anyone know what kind of health insurance we have to take up in order to be able to apply as economically self sufficient or what the minimum coverage has to be? I couldn't find anything about that at all and I doubt that we will be covered under the NHS.

Thank you very much in advance!

P.S. Also as I have never been to Germany before in my 28 years of life I do not have any insurance with the national health scheme there.

I really dont know.I never ever seen anyone asking for that.
I bought my wife couple of times insurance(short trips) and that was utter waist of money.I am not sure about long term residence.
BUPA UK or worldwide can provide you with that kind of insurance..

Thanks Triple H! That was indeed a fast reply.

I am not really sure about it. I read the requirements and it clearly says that we need to show that we have sufficient funds... and we need a health insurance... I guess I will just drop BUPA an email. I am just afraid they will want to sell and of course say the most expensive scheme is just sufficient.

I hope you don't mind me asking another question: Do you have a clue what other documents will I have to provide with my application as a self sufficient person apart from the bank statements? Because I do not know what else I might be able to show to prove it... Certainly no tax forms etc. as I only pay taxes on employment here in Singapore and I have never paid taxes in Canada due to not living there at all.

Also: what is up with the same day service the IND provides for the EEA1? I know it is not available for my wife but can I just go down to Croydon and really do the whole thing like a doctor's appointment (i.e. going in doing the talk and getting the registration certificate)?

Last but not least you might want to publish this link in a sticky announcement which I haven't seen around here:

    http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/applyi ... unationals

If you scroll down to the bottom you can see what applications they are currently working on.

Lol... I just hope they don't mind it being Swiss bank accounts. But at least they do have my name on it!

Why two passports and the wedding certificate? That is only for my wife's EEA2 right?

Again thank you very much for replying so quickly. If anyone else knows about the health insurance and the same day service I would be thankful if you would answer my questions. Thanks already in advance.

Okay I don't really get that. That we need both of them for the EEA family permit is clear. But I am talking about my EEA1 afterwards. There the forms clearly say that only EEA family member shall be listed on the form.

I understand that after I applied for my EEA1 and got it (I am planning to do that using the same day service at Croydon) we will then lodge her application and then we need the wedding certificate and both our passports.

The reason why I want to do my EEA1 first seperately is so I know for sure that the self sufficient thing went through... And as I hope to get it back on the same day I will then knowing it shouldn't be a problem give her my passport for her EEA2 application. Or do I have to do both applications together at the same time?

Yeah well... guess I don't want to go with the flow because if I can have a same day service and actually make the application in person I rather do that to know that at least my application will go through smoothly and then they can struggle with my wife's birth certificate etc. in Japanese lol! Sorry but I don't trust those guys and personal application is always better. Sadly it is not available for the non EEA spouse.

Again thank you for your help Triple H.

If anyone else knows about the same day service for EEA1 applications and the medical insurance please share your wisdom with me.

    My experiance

I am BUlgarian, my wife Lithuanian. She applied as a self-sufficient person. Proof of self-sufficiency was my payslips. I worked with my EEA Family Permit. We didn't send medical insurance and still got everything back in 3 months. She got a 5 year residence permit, and I got a 5 year stamp in my passport. I think one thing you can do, is when you come to the UK go to a local surgery and register you and your wife with a GP under the NHS. In a couple of weeks they will send you your Health Insurance Cards. It is totally free. Once you get those apply in person for yourself. Same day service is free for EU nationals at PEO in Croydon, but you have to make an appointment and they only have 30 free same day appointments per day for EU nationals. Once you get your Registration Certificate, send the papers for your wife.

Advice on your EEA Family Permit- write a letter to the embassy and state that under the Directive 2004/38/EC you intend to travel to the UK and want your wife to accompany you. Check the directive number just in case I didn't get it right.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer Petkanov. That basically answers my questions. However I am wondering whether I have to be working and paying taxes in order to be able to register under the NHS?

They don't care when you register

All they had to see was our passports with my eea family permit to register. Just to let you know, before we applied we were also thinking of getting insurance just in case but decided to risk it without it. When we applied we didn't even have those NHS cards yet. By the way if you want to play safe, you can get private medical insurance for around 20 pounds per month. Then you apply get your papers and then if you wish cancel the insurance. Just search on google on health insurance uk and you should get plenty of choice!
