    First of all what a great forum this is. I'm so glad to have found it.

    Right now I'm in the process of organising my move to Milan hopefully by end of April/early May.
    My situation is this:
    My Japanese fiance has just been posted to the Milan office so he has an apartment, car, phone etc. which is great....less things to take care of.
    But for myself I'm concerned about medical/health cover whilst I'm in Italy. I won't be working in Milan so don't have company to cover me.
    I realised the E111 form is not applicable since I'll be in Italy longer than 3 months so I enquired further and got in contact with the Pension Service here who sent me an E106 form which I've filled out.
    Depending on the information given on the form I may or may not get medical cover in Italy, so I'll just have to wait and see for their reply.

    Is anyone in the same position as me? who's moved to Milan within the EU and is not working?
    How did you go about getting medical cover?

    I read without some sort of medical cover I cannot register with a local GP, is this correct?
    I don't want to take out private health insurance, not if I really don't have to. I just want to be able to pop in to see a GP when I'm ill...just like the way it is in the UK.
    This is the only thing that concerns me for now.

    Hi,

    Emergency health care is provided in Italy. So you might just pop up to an hospital to get the prescription. You can also go back to your country by the end of the 3 months to pick up a new E111 and use it again in Italy.

    However indeed the best solution is to get a E106 form. This may give full State cover, depending on your individual circumstances, but probably not for more than 2 to 2 1/2 years. It's more than enough regarding your situation described above.

    After that you lose all entitlement to any State medical cover until you can meet the qualification for a State pension and then use the form E121.

    The E111 given by the Post Office in the UK is valid "for life", unlike the one given in France for example. So, even after 3 months, you can still continue to use it...

    As an aside, emergencies are free in Italy. I once broke my arm over there. I went to get some x-rays, a plaster cast, and a nice smile from the nurse, all for free (and no queue for the ER, we're not talking about the NHS here).

    I'll be living in Milan for up to 5 yrs so it would be best if I can get the E106 certificate.
    During these years it's certain I will start a family. If I do not get the E106 will the E111 be sufficient for maternity care?
    I'm still not clear as to what my rights are in Italy. I'm the sort of person who likes to do things 'properly' if you know what I mean.

    I've just thought of something as well, will my fiance's company medical insurance cover me once we've married? I'm sure most of them cover their spouses and family right?
    We're getting married hopefully in September in Italy :)

    Hi,

    Most of major companies employing expats know how important it is to take care of the family, so your fiance should inform the HR department of your plan to get married, and make sure that the medical insurance cover is upgraded to couple or family, when necessary.
    I have never heard of any med insurance refusing to add spouse and kid on their scheme. It really is a matter of requesting it from the HR department.
