Hello there,

A possibly stupid question:

I'm a German national living in Germany - with a South African spouse. She has her residence permit for Germany but we're trying to figure out whether she needs a tourist visa to visit Austria for a week, for a family reunion.

The Austrian consulate site for the UK basically says that she wouldn't need a visa if a) she is a family member, b) she has a residence permit and c) that we travel together.

Thinking back, however, I recall that she needed a visa for a previous visit to Austria, when we lived in Ireland some eight years ago.

Anybody been in a similar situation? Any thoughts on the matter?

She does NOT need a visa because both Germany and Austria are in the Schengen zone.

She needed visa from Ireland because Ireland is not a Schengen country.

Ah, that explains it, I was getting confused between EU vs. Schengen - much appreciated Sir.
