Contributions

Ghana's national pension plan is managed by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust. Contribution rates are:

  • Employers: 13% of worker's basic salary
  • Workers: 5.5% of workers basic salary
  • Of the total contribution, 13.5% is remitted to Mandatory first tier, managed by SSNIT. 5% is given to the Mandatory second tier privately managed occupational scheme.

Benefits

Statutory Sick Pay

There are no laws addressing paid sick leave and its length in the Ghana Labour Act. It is however stipulated that employers cannot dismiss a worker during a period of illness, pregnancy or disability, assuming it is temporary or for a short period.

Maternity Leave and Maternity Pay

Female workers are entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave with full pay. This leave can be extended if the woman has a caesarean delivery, an abnormal birth or twins.

There is no paternity leave.

The Ghana Card

All Ghanaian citizens are issued a biometric national identity card that acts as proof of identity, citizenship and residence. The card is managed by the National Identification Agency, and applications for the card can be made in most major towns.
