I have been with my partner on and off for 8 years. At the moment he is in Portugal which is where we would like to get married. He is from Ecuador. I need to know what his rights would be regarding UK citizenship. We both travel quite a lot, but he really would like to settle in the UK. Would it be better for us to get married in the UK, or is it just the same if the ceremony is in Portugal? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When married to a EU citizen you get the rights of family members, to stay within the EU.

Also marriage to a British citizen does not automatically qualify you as a British citizen as you must satisfy the requirements listed under the British Nationality Act:
    http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... ofcitizen/
However as a spouse of a British citizen, you do not need to comply with the 3 year residency period (but need to have been married for at least 3 years instead).

As you see, it does not depend on where you get married, but on the Who and How long terms, as well as your wish to settle in the UK.

Thanks for your response. So that means it makes no difference if we get married in the UK or Portugal. There is no benefit if we were to get married in the uK?

The location where you get married is irrelevant - of course as long as the marriage is recognised as valid in the UK but thats certainly not going to be your problem.

    Good luck !
