I'd be really grateful if anyone out there has advice on this. A really annoying situation to be stuck in...

We've just finished 2 years (just over 2 years) in Oz, in Sydney, which was a great experience. Having just moved back to the UK I'm having problems with my car insurance.

When I moved to Oz, the insurer there which is a major and reputable company, recognised my UK no claims bonus and kept me on full no claims (as I was in the UK).
Returning to the UK, I am now being told that:
    1. If you are out fo the UK for more than 2 years (no matter where or what you do there) you lose all of your no claims bonus.
    2. Furthermore, you are charged an additional premium for not having been resident in the UK for the past three years.
The insurance premium quoted to me by the AA went from GBP330 to GBP660 because of this. An absolutely crazy situation..

Does anyone know companies that will accept overseas insurance no claims (I have all the paperwork, plus the company I was insured with in Australia - perhaps amazingly for my UK companies - is able to use things like email to provide information about me and my insurance.
I'm wondering if any smaller insurance companies have wisely noted this problem and are offering insurance that while more expensive than the big insurers for standard offers, are able to offer a cheaper price than 660GBP by deciding to accept my no claims value.

Any ideas on this really welcomed - at the moment. I have a car I can't drive because of this, and don't know even if there's anyone to turn to.

    Thanks all,
    Rob

PS: If someone knows an ombudsman or UK body that looks at insurance and can help me on this (should they be sympathetic to this kind of thing) then that would be good too.
