I'm married to a Dutch national. I am American. We were discussing whether or not I could work in the Netherlands by virtue of being married to a Dutch national, but we weren't sure. My spouse is investigating through the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs here in the US, but was curious about what the community here had to say on the matter.

If we hear official word either way, I will update this topic.

    Thanks in advance.

The Expat guide to Amsterdam is a good place to start regarding visas and right to work. Your right to work will depend on your visa:

"The second way of getting a work permit is to have a Dutch or EU partner. Your partner must be living and working in the Netherlands and be willing to sponsor you. i.e. they agree to be financially responsible for you while you are looking for a job or if you happen to lose one. The two of you must prove that you are in a relationship and that you live together. If the relationship should end or one of you should move out, the permit will no longer be valid.

For more information, please log onto www.workpermit.nl"

Hope that helps! :D Anyone else have info/tips?

Thank you for your response, that's a great lead. I may be able to get a work permit on my own merit (working professional, PhD). Thanks again!!

    Now to look for work...

As noted above, the Expat guide to Amsterdam's visa section is the best place to start.

You may also try our article on Obtaining a Visa to Live, Study and Work in: Schengen Area which provides info on work visa, etc.

    Good luck!
