    Hi,

My Kenyan partner, I am a UK citizen, plans to apply for a UK fiance visa. I have an income from rental property, which I can prove, of £16,440 (no other income). The shortfall I plan to meet by supplying details of my savings. The new rules require £18,600 income. The shortfall is £2,160. Under the new rules I am required to have savings of £16,000 plus 2.5 times the shortfall. Thus, I shall need savings of £21,400. I am selling all my shares to reach the required amount, I will barely make it to the £22,000 but I will make it over the £21,400.

The question is, since I am required to show evidence of holding the savings for six months will I have to wait six months from the date the shares were turned into cash, or will ownership of the shares, now converted to cash, suffice of proof of having met the requirement?

I would appreciate any advice from those in the know. The six months may not seem long but there are very good reasons to want to cut this waiting period short. If I qualify I would like her to apply for a fiance visa as soon as we have collected the documents. I would appreciate advice about the savings aspect of this, thank you in advance.

Only cash savings will be accepted, and they must have been held by you under your control for six months - so I'm afraid you will have to wait the six months. The full rules can be found here.

Yes, thanks for your post and its link. I was clutching at straws and there is no option but to wait. Sometimes one just needs confirmation from someone else.

Unfortunately the worst thing imaginable came to pass. I was worried about my partner in Kenya, it's not the safest of places and she was pregnant. A few days ago had a traffic accident whilst coming back from the scan at the local hospital. She was a passenger in a Tuk Tuk and lost the baby. Of course, I would like to go over and be with her but can't as we need to keep the £22,000 in cash for the UK new rules.

I only mention this to show there are real consequences to the cumbersome process of 'proving' things. We will get through this but it is hard, and I it's hard to understand why it has to be cash, I can turn shares into cash in a matter of minutes. This is not directed at anyone I am just venting a little bit of heartache. Thanks for your reply, we have six months now to get everything right.

That's so sad, iffydooda. I wish you all the best for the time when you're able to make the application.
