    Hi

my family and I are moving to Valencia, Spain in a couple of months. If there is anyone already out there in a similiar position to us we would love to hear from you for any advice you may have. We have two children, one pre school and one that we will need to enrol in school. We are learning Spanish at the moment but my biggest concern is that my daughter will struggle at school due to the language barrier. I am a teacher and will be looking for work in International Schools and my husband is in IT.

    Hi,
By learning from others' experience, it seems that it's not a problem for children to adapt in a foreign country. I heard that a friend of a friend that put her daughter at school in England at the age of 11 didn't have any problem and the girl was in top 5 of the class at the end of the year.
For others it might be a bit difficult at the beginning, but they always manage better and quicker than us after a while.
Moreover it's going to be easier if you put your child in an international school.

Don't forget to give us some news when you are over there.
    Best of luck

    Hi Jane

I'm wondering if you have made the move yet, and how it's going there for you and all the family?

We are planning to move to Valencia in the very near future (May/June 04), just me and my husband and we are trying very hard to get some contact with English speakers who are there already so I would love to hear from you. You may gather from my address that we currently live on the lovely Isle of Man!

All the very best to you

    Stella

My husband and I are about to move to valencia for a year. He's going to be at the university as a (very )mature student of Spanish, and I will be more of a lady of leisure, taking a career break.

We would be very pleased to meet some English speakers living in the city. I don't get the impression there are that many- so please get in touch!

    Hi,

Vikki and I moved lock, stock and barrel to Spain over 2yrs ago. We have three children, ages ranging from 9-13, and have hit more brick walls than can be counted.

We have broken most of them down and have gained a great deal of experience along the way!

Moving to Spain has been the making of this family! However, there are problems that all prospective ex-pats have to face. Spain has it's own culture and rules, and a fair amount of "jobs-worth's".

However navigate through these, and this is arguably one of the nicest places to live.

So why do I write here?

Well, in true altruistic form Vikki and I can help others considering the move to Spain. Professionally, I can help you with PC's and Telecoms which is a real problem here, but not unsolvable.

    Hi there,

I am 26 Irish girl who has being working in Valencia for almost a year now.....the move to Valencia is a hard one....the Valenciano´s are breed onto themselves.....however after a year my company are moving me back to Ireland and I don´t want to go!!!!
Valencians are very resevered when it comes to hiring and nearly always prefer a Spanish person working for them. I have seen people come and go...(mostly to Madrid) looking to start a career in Spain.
However life here is great and worth the effort.
Learning Spanish is a most here, the level of english speakers here is low.

If anyone needs any practical advice about moving to Valencia e-mail me and I would be glad to help.

contacts/friends both here in England and in Spain

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking to move to the costa blanca in about a year, either to Alicante or Valencia.

I am currently learning spanish so that it will be easier to get a job/flat etc when i do go over.

I am a 45yr old single woman, and would like to chat to anyone who is either already in the costa blanca area or still in England and looking to move to spain.

As i am going to be settling over there on my own, it is nice to have contacts/friends both here in England and in Spain, also nice to chat to people about how they got flats/jobs etc etc...

Hope to hear from all u nice people out there

    Kim xx :)

    Re: winter in Valencia

    Hi Anwar,

No the winters here are generally mild, particularly south of Valencia, the coldest monthst being December through to March, with average daytime temps around 15 deg C+. The best months for swimming are between June and September. For instance my pool is still at 23 degs C but falling daily now.

    Hi Jane

We are in a similar position as yourself. However we do not have young children ours are older. Sadly a son who is 32 and just won't leave home, now he is coming to Spain!

    That's our problem.

We have sold our house and are purchasing a house in Picassent, north west Valencia.

We were out there last week and still are unable to verify on aspect of our Spanish house...i.e. does it have mains water. The estate agenst says it has, but the evidence is that it has three wells and feeds from these. We are not happy.

Do you happen to know the name of the "water board" in that region so we can make contact to verify this?

I know this is not what your original message was about but these forums are often the best way of finding out.

    Hi

We are moving to Valencia (Picassent) in January. House sold and another well on way to being purchased.

Our problem is that we cannot verify whether this property in Spain has mains water.

The evidence is that it comes from springs. However, the agent who is the brother of our close friend there says no, it definetly has mains water but there is no evidence of a meter. A little embarrasing since he persists saying there is.

Whilst I appreciate that meters are removed when properties ar emplty for a while...this one has been empty, none of the surrounding properties have meters showing either.

Can you help? Do you know the contact name and or number of the local "water board" please?

Likewsie there does not appear to be telephone services available...no immediate telephone lines apparent. I have investigated from UK the possibilities of use of GPRS for telephone service and internet. Do you know anything better or perhaps how I can contact Telephonica?

    Hi Baz,

Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink huh! OK, first, do not panic! A great number of properties here in Valencia have wells. It means very little as most also have mains supplied too. So your friend's brother is most likely to be correct.

However, if I read between the lines here, you appear to be basisng your information on that supplied by an estate agent. If this is the case, then you should urgently consider hiring an english speaking solicitor. He/she would find all this out for you at no extra cost. Estate agents here very often tell you that one is not necessary, but it most emphatically is!!! And they are considerably cheaper than in the UK too. If you have already got a solicitor, then speak with them, they will have no problem finding out the truth. Not only that you will have protected yourself from any sharp practices that may be in play.

It does happen, and all too frequently.

Now to Telecoms. Ouch, I always advise prospective purchasers check for evidence of telephones, before making any kind of commitment!! If you are not already connected then you will undoubtedly have problems. Telefonica usually have no interest in requests for connections if the infrastructure for connection is not already in place. I know because this what I spend my working hours sorting out. However there are options available, a lot depends on how urgent your problem of communication is likely to be. You have hit on one of the solutions, GPRS, but there are pitfalls in terms of cost or efficiency. The honest answer is, how big is your budget?

If you do indeed have a landline to the house or at least a pole adjacent then you might be in with a chance, if not then the prospects are bleak.

If you wish, I will go into considerably more detail, direct to you at your e-mail address, but in the meantime I hope this snippet is of some interest and value.

    Regards

    Greg

    Re: winter in Valencia

I love swimming in the sea too. The winters are lovely here, the pools are too cold already, but the sea is OK. last year we invested in some cheap 3/4 wetsuits and we enjoyed the surf all winter. Loads of sunshine too.

    hope this helps.

    Hi There,

Me(irish) and my Boyfriend(scottish) are hoping to move to either Costa Blanca/valencia or Costa del Sol, really not to sure yet. Which is the best place to go? we will both be looking for jobs, he in construction and me well i will do anything..bar,hotel or call center work. We dont know anybody over there, so i would be grateful for some advice. We are hoping to rent somewhere, but the problem is we are planning to go at either the end of may or beginning of June....is this a bad time to look for something to rent that will not be so expensive.

    Hi there,
I am moving to Valencia very soon in the new year.
I am trained to teach English as a foreign language and am a self-taught Spanish speaker.
I am hoping to find work either as a tutor but I also play and sing and maybe will look for entertainment work.
I was hoping to get in contact with anyone in Valencia in advance of moving there for any advice.
If you are interested in contacting me, even just to chat then please do,
    Regards,
    Danny
