Before i send in a c1 application, i thought i’d post here and see if i’d be wasting the $200+ dollars to apply.

I was born in canada post-1983, and my father currently holds a british passport that states “british citizen”. He was born as a british protected person in kenya in 1942 (on his kenyan birth certificate), and lived/worked in the uk for a number of years in the 1960s/1970s.

He doesn’t recall ever having to register/naturalize, and i can’t really find any such documentation. I also have his old british passport issued in kampala, uganda in 1965, and under nationality status it says “british subject: citizen of the united kingdom and colonies.”

    the application requires:

your father’s full (shows parents details) uk or british overseas territories birth certificate or registration/naturalisation document and marriage certificate as recorded by the state/province/country registrar.

Will the birth certificate i have be sufficient for the application? I can’t seem to find any kind of certificate of registration or naturalization and he doesn’t think he ever got one. I’ve tried to search online and can’t find anything about where/when it would have been issued (in uganda or kenya of all places? The national archives?), or if it would have been issued at all and he doesn't know either.

I’m hoping i can avoid all that, and send in what i have (if i'm a citizen, that is)?

    Thanks for your help!

Have you checked the website for the British Embassy or Consulate? That is what I did in order to get my German citizenship proven through the German Consulate. They can inform you not only what you need in order to prove what you want but also how much it will cost. For me, I only had to travel to Toronto in order to get the documents verified and get my German passport. All I did was to get a sheet that listed what documents I needed and before this I checked there website to find out if I would qualify or not. Good Luck.
