For anyone who has never obtained a Polish passport, once you get your confirmation of Polish Citizenship and your Polish birth certificate, the next step is to apply for a PESEL number. A PESEL number is also required to apply for a Polish passport.

In the past you were able to apply for a PESEL number and a Polish passport at the same time. Recently the laws changed, and the PESEL number is a prerequisite to start the passport application.

To apply for a PESEL you will need your Polish birth certificate and the PESEL application form whcih can be obtained from the consulate. You can apply for a PESEL through your consulate by mail.

    1. Is a Polish birth certificate still required to obtain a first Polish passport even after obtaining a PESEL number? In other words, do you need one Polish birth certificate for the PESEL, a second for the passport, and a third for the confirmation of Polish citizenship?

    2. To save time, can you apply for the PESEL number after you've received the Polish birth certificate and applied for confirmation of Polish citizeship, but before the confirmation of citizenship is complete?

    3. How long does it typically take to obtain a PESEL number?

In case it's relevant to the questions, I'm in Arizona and my consulate is in Los Angeles, California.

    Thank you in advance.

A photocopy (ie not original, not notarized) of the Polish birth certificate is sufficient for the PESEL application.

The PESEL should come pretty fast, a few weeks.

All you need to apply for a PESEL is a Polish birth certificate. It doesn't matter if the Confirmation of Polish citizenship is still pending.

You'll need all 3 to apply for the passport, birth certificate, PESEL and the Confirmation of Polish citizenship.

Has anyone applied for the PESEL by mail to the LA consulate or does it have to go to Chicago?

I emailed the LA consulate (to a few different people), and they told me all i had to do was send them copies of my pesel application, confirmation of citizenship and my polish birth cert. I could mail, fax, or even just e-mail copies. Since you're in OH, NY is your jurisdiction, http://www.washington.polemb.net/index.php?document=71
