    Hi,

Sorry if this type of question has been asked before - after looking online for an answer as my situation, i could not find any.

My boyfriend of a year and a half (US citizen, getting out of the US navy in april) and myself (french citizen, residing in the US at the moment) are planning to move to Ireland in may-june 2010.

Being a EU citizen, i know i do not need a visa to stay or work in Ireland, however i am not sure how to proceed for my boyfriend's immigration there?

I know he could apply for a work visa, but would he be entitled to some type of residency in a EU country without the hassle, considering we are together? Or does this apply only to married couples?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi b91911.

You have the right to reside in Ireland for a period longer than three months if you are employed, self-employed, enrolled in a course of study or are financially self-sufficient.

Your partner with whom you are in a durable relationship, duly attested, has the same rights as you do, if joining or accompanying you in Ireland.

You need to have documentary evidence to prove that you are in a durable relationship, duly attested.

Upon arrival in Ireland, you should show to the Garda National Immigration Bureau (Irish immigration officials):

    • Your passport or National ID card
    • Your boyfriend's passport
    • Sufficient evidence to prove that you are in a durable relationship, duly attested

With this, your boyfriend's entry cannot be refused unless his character poses a significant risk to the public or he has one of a specific list of serious illnesses.
