I sent in a request for my grandfather's birth cert to the polish embassy in DC. I sent a follow up e-mail with them to see if they received my request, and they finally responded by saying that my request was forwarded to the consulate in L.A. (because I live in CA). But I was under the impression vital statistics had to be requested from the embassy (the consulates could not do this, at least in the U.S.). Does the embassy/consulate just forward the request to the appropriate county in Poland? Just curious if anyone knows where the birth cert would be printed i guess.

It's really the consulate that handles those things. Consulates deal with private citizens (Polish or foreign, ie US), embassies are for dealings between governments.
In DC the consulate and embassy are in the same building.
The consulate where you live (in your case Calif) would handle it.
They send the request to the local office in Poland; the office sends the certificate to the consulate and the consulate sends it to you, by registered mail. Takes a few months but in the end a lot easier than dealing with the local office. Maybe quicker too since the consulate will ensure the request is in its proper form.
I've dealt with DC and had good results.

Yea, I was just in DC and went to the consular division at the embassy and took care of it in person, was pretty easy, but told it would take at a minimum 2 months.
