Just wondering if anyone has had a similar situation. I am an Australian expat working abroad. My wife is a French resident who has lived in France 25 yrs. Upon us deciding to get married she thought i would easier if she applied for French citizenship, particularly because we are expecting a baby, to be born in France. She has lived and worked in France for 25 yrs, has 2 Masters degrees from French Univeristies, so we assumed citizenship for her would be straightforward.

We have just been informed by the French govt her application for citizenship was rejected because i, as her husband, are not a resident of France. I have a company that requires me to live and work abroad for much of my time so i don't wont French residence right at this moment. But the govt is saying unless i have residency, she cannot obtain citizenship. Does this make any sense to anyone? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any insights on this? Thanks.

To me this does not make the least sense. I know that by naturalizing as a French citizen you agree that you intend to make France your home country of residency, but I assume that your wife having lived there for over 25 years her intention would be to continue to live in France. Unless the government speculates that because you are not resident in France, your wife will leave the country as soon as she gets the French citizenship, that's the only reason I could think of for the refusal.
