    Hi everyone,

Im from Paris and I plan to move back to Edinburgh (Scotland) where i studied for two years. I have a French car that I want to bring with me. My insurance will only insure me for the first 3 months while Im abroad after what I'll have to be insured in UK. What is the processes to get a car insured in UK? is it easy to insure a French car?

    kind regards,

    Toug

Currently in the process of doing so (also from Paris).
It is expensive and I am stuck with the speedometer that should display MpH instead of KpH.
The process overall is in the range of £600 - £1,000 because you need quite a lot of things done. See the DVLA official documents.

Some people make themselves the sticker that displays MPH (the circle that has to go underneath the arrow) and they ask a garage to put it, so they canshow the invoice to the MOT for the change of the speedo face.

insuring an imported car in the uk

Car insurance for a vehicle not yet registered in the UK can be difficult to arrange. Most UK insurers will not insure a car that does not have a UK registration number. The problem is that the DVLA will not register a car without proof of UK insurance - a vicious circle.

A J Insurance Service - (0870) 444 3511 can offer annual motor insurance for cars being imported into the UK. Cover is issued initially on the basis of the chassis number - this allows the DVLA to register the car.

This is a very flexible and competetively priced policy, which can also include cover for use in all other EU countries- annual green card cover -with no time restrictions.

I just want to thank rsyellow for the advice: I just moved from France to the UK with my car and I have been trying to get a British insurance certificate for weeks. I've contacted "specialists" that were asking for hideously huge amount of money and finally found the discussion on this forum. I'm not a Tesco fan neither but I thought "why not?". I've contacted Tesco car insurance and I've been on the phone with this incredibly nice and helpful lady who told me that they would insure my car just on the basis of the chassis number. In 10 minutes, the problem was solved and I now have a British insurance on my French car for a reasonable price! So, thank you rsyellow and thank you Tesco!

For info, just called Tesco (Dec 2008) and they confirmed that they will insure me based on chassis number...
Did you have to change the plates after you got the Tesco insurance??
How does it work and what is required??
Thanks in advance, you are giving me hope again as I was nearly selling my recent car!!!

    Hi,
    I'm in the same situation.
But I want to know if the insurance company (like tesco) can asked me to change my french plate or not if I choose an insurance based on the chassis.
I need an insurance for 9 months.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi all,

Just wondering if we can have an answer to all these questions. I would like to bring my van here, but that would be for a few years only (3 or 4), so if I can avoid changing the plate that would be nice. But could someone confirm that the Tesco insurance is not "temporary", and what do they want exactly?
    Thanks

    Hi All,
Despite calling Tesco and getting the green light to insure the car based on the chassis, i didn't proceed.
Can someone like micky06 confirm that it works and that we have nothing to change. I have been told that taking the insurance is not enough...
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Regards
    A

Then you need a Short Term Car Insurance plan for the above situations. These plans are perfect for situations when you have to drive your car or someone else would be driving your car for a few days. The plans can be bought for periods ranging from one day to almost a month and can be renewed many times in a year. The premium charges will be on a per day basis and therefore would be saving a lot of your insurance costs. So, why pay more for a yearly cover plan when you can pay as you go with a temporary plan?
