    Hi,

I'm an Englishman living in Switzerland with my French wife. We've been married nearly 4 years now, and I understand that after 4 years I would be entitles to apply for French Citizenship.

Is this true? If so, do I lose my British Citizenship? Is the contrary applicable to my wife?

She has been living here in Switzerland for more than 13 years, in the same village. She has been informed that she would be entitled to Swiss citizenship? Is that true?

The reason we're asking is that we're expecting a child. My wife already has two children who are French\Swiss Dual national from a previous relationship, and we would like our child to have as much as possible in common with its siblings. Ideally we would like the whole family to be French/Swiss dual National, but I can see some advantages to retaining my British citizenship if possible and extending that to my child, but not at the expense of common roots with his or her siblings.

Your advice is welcomed, but if possible, could you include links to official websites where we can see and interpret the wording ourselves?? No disrespect to you, but your word carries nothing compared to official documentation.. I Can't very well go into a passport office and say "So and so on easyexpat.com said this was the case so give me a passport please!" But even if you can't find the info, your comments and experiences would be warmly welcomed.

    Thanks in advance.

Jon and Nathalie (and little ???)

Check wikipedia, it has a number of articles on the subject. The situation in Switzerland depends very much on your local area, as naturalisation is a local matter there. If your wife takes Swiss citizenship, that should extend to the baby, too. The baby will also be British by decent, which means that your grandchildren will not be British unless born in Britain. You taking French citizenship does not seem to make a difference, though.
