Here is a question then. My mother was born in Poland in 1942, moved to Germany after the war as a DP and then emigrated to Canada after Jan. 15, 1951.
My grandparents and her did not get Canadian citizenship until 1956. She would have been 14 at the time. Would this affect her Polish citizenship? As far as I know my grandparents did not give up their citizenship prior to or after getting the Canadian. Since my mother was a minor in the eyes of the law, this makes me question the possibility of obtaining a polish citizenship for myself.

Get something to document the naturalization (i.e. nat. cert.) of your mother, and I don't see a problem. Since it's post-'51 you should be able to claim citizenship through her anyway.

    Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone was about to see if there was info out there relating to confirmation of Polish citizenship and what follows?

I received confirmation of my Polish citizenship from the Wojewoda Mazowiecki on 20 June, and am now in a situation where I would like to get a PESEL number along with ID card and passport.

Does anyone know if its possible to acquire a PESEL number from within the UK, or is it possible to make an e-mail application to get this?

From what bits of info I have sought, I think an ID is only mandatory for actually living in Poland, but something I would like all the same, so I will have an address from family there in a few months. Again does anyone know how to make an application for this? Is PESEL number required first?

Now, the big one - Passport :)

Is a PESEL number required for a passport application? Can an application be made from within Poland? I think it may be quicker?

Anyway, sorry about all the questions, if anyone would like to know how I went about getting my confirmation of citizenship, I'll gladly post.

    Thanks

when you apply for the passport at the consulate, you will also apply for the PESEL number a the same time with an additional application.

From what I've read here and there, it seems a long old process (6 months) to put an application in and get the passport back again, compared to the short time to apply in Poland. Maybe I'm shouldn't be so impatient considering I waited 18 months to get issued my confirmation of citizenship??

I remember that the consulate sent me a 'passport questionnaire' a good while ago, is this still the correct form? How easy was it to fill in? There are parts I don't understand like 'current address in Poland' are there parts which are not applicable to overseas applications?

What was the PESEL form like to fill in? Is there much to answer?

Was this a one trip visit to the consulate? (except collecting new passport once arrived)

Is it just the confirmation of citizenship certificate and Polish birth certificate needed to make an application.

Sorry about all the questions, just need to do it right first time

    Thanks

    Hi all,

This is my first post but I have been reading this forum whilst I applied for my citizenship. I applied two years ago and have just been sent my confirmation of citizenship. It was 1 year, 11 and a half months waiting but it was worth it. For your information, I am Australian born. My mother was born in Germany in 1946 as a displaced person. Both her parents were Polish refugees. They moved to Australia in the 50s and did not become Australian citizens until after 1951 (the key date). My grandparents were also married in the displaced persons camp. My Grandfather was from a village that is now in Belarus but my Grandmother was from a town near Lodz

My case was easy to prove as my Mother was not considered by any country as being German. Therefore as she was born a Polish citizen and did not become an Australian citizen until after 1951. So when I was born I was automatically considered a Polish citizen. I still had to wait the two years but I now have a certificate that states that I am a Polish citizen.

The website that is recommended in this forum http://members.optusnet.com.au/~losthistories/ was a big help. To any Australians, Kiwis or anyone else thinking of getting help from this website, I highly recommend them. Without their help I am sure that it would have taken longer or they would have sent the whole file back to me as incomplete.

I now begin the process of applying for the passport. It is a long wait for confirmation but it is worth it. I have never been so proud to be Polish.

    Goodluck to everyone.

    Well everyone,

I think I get the idea on how to apply for the passport and PESEL through the consulate, but can someone help me out on the address parts.

Last address in Poland on the passport application, enough to provide city and state.

PESEL - Address in Poland, and temp or perm.

Even though i have the opportunity to use some family's address in Poland, i just wondered what others do on this part of the application if they have acquired citizenship but were born and live outside of Poland?

I must be the biggest pain ever, with all these questions.

You don't need to give an address in Poland. If you were born outside Poland and never lived there, that part of the application doesn't apply to you. You only need to put the current address where you live now.

That makes things seem a bit easier, thanks.

    13. Seria i numer dokumentu

Is this the number off the top left hand corner of the confirmation certificate when providing identity details of citizenship?

Do you know which section I would put my address in where I live now, if I don't need to provide a Polish address?

IV.Adres zameldowania na pobyt stały lub czasowy ponad dwa miesiące

    or

    V. Adres zameldowania na pobyt stały za granicą

How long does a passport application outside of Poland generally take?

    Cheers everyone

NO!...That would be the number of your temporary Polish Passport (if you have one). Otherwise, leave it blank.

You should put your current address in:

    V. Adres zameldowania na pobyt stały za granicą

For me, it took 2 months from the time I applied until I received it in the Polish Consulate in London.

For my sister, in Argentina, it took 7 months!

OK, here is the short version.

My grandfather was born in Poland in 1914. My grandmother was born in U.S.S.R. My mother was born in Poland in 1946. My grandfather, grandmother and mother emigrated to Israel in November/December 1950. They later emigrated to the U.S., which is where I was born.

Did I obtain Polish citizenship at birth? Can I get confirmation of citizenship and a passport from the Polish government?

My confusion is over Israel's Law of Return of 1950. Did it grant automatic citizenship (thus causing an issue under the 1920 Polish law), or was citizenship only granted after the Law of Nationality of 1952 (thereby occurring after the 1951 Polish law)? My grandfather has since passed away and my grandmother cannot remember when she got citizenship in Israel. Thus, the confusion.

Thanks for all you help and wisdom,

    Don

You're grandfather was born in Poland before Poland was a country, or at least the modern Republic of Poland (1918 I believe?). Your mother, though, should be a citizen. The burden is on you to prove documents showing this, i.e. her Polish passport (probably best thing you can use) or her Polish birth certificate (this is only somewhat useful, because it doesn't actually prove someone is/was a citizen). It wasn't until 1951 that a mother could pass citizenship to her children (since your dad's not Polish, or a Polish citizen), but since you're obviously born later than that I see no problem with that, but I could be wrong on this item.

As far as Israel is concerned, as long as nothing took place there (ie. marriages) of you or your mother, I would just pretend that it never happened. For purposes of the Polish government, they didn't go there. You will, however, then need to show them your mother's POST X-X-1953 naturalization certificate (FROM THE US ONLY) showing she was naturalized after that date (look in up in previous posts here). If she wasn't ever naturalized you need to wait about a year for a letter from USCIS stating that they have no record of her naturalization. If she become a citizen before that day in 1951, you're SOL :(.

Good luck, I hope I didn't miss anything, but if I did, I'm sure one of the many enlightened people here will point you in the correct direction.

Thanks for the response. No marriages or anything in Israel. Naturalized in U.S. in the 60's. All I have for my mother is her Polish birth certificate, no passport. I also have my grandparents Polish marriage certificate.

It might be enough, only one way to find out - send it in..

Anyone else ever send in a confirmation of citizenship without passport, and just birth cert??

It's necessary to add that, meanwhile, apart from the citizenship acts of 1920 and 1951, also other acts concerning citizenship were issued. On their basis Polish citizenship was lost by persons who emigrated to Federal Republic of Germany and Israel.

However some people by taking a court action managed to reinstate their lost citizenship.

it would be a good idea to consult a lawyer about your situation.

I agree... I woudn't mention it... but in the application they ask you a lot of questions about where you've been since you left Poland and arrived in the US and they ask you to prove with immigration doccuments those dates.
