Hello hoping to get some help here. Both my daughters who were born in Canada, and have lived here in the UK now for over 16 years are being told theyare illegally staying Britan!! This has come about now that they are both finished school and are looking for jobs, and now cannot get work due to having no proof that they are entitled to work in the UK!! My question is does anyone know if they are entitled to French passports as I am a French national living in the UK? Or do we need to go a different route now? I have been told the costs for the tests will amount to over 2000 GBP to get my girls indefinite leave?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hm, that sounds like the paperwork was never sorted, but you need to give more information about the circumstances. Who are the parents? What legal status do they have? Since when? How old are your daughters? What does the birth certificate say? Do they only have Canadian citizenship? How have they been living in the UK?

One option would be to declare them family members (dependent minors) of a European national exercising treaty rights (that would be you). As such they would have automatically acquired permanent residence after 5 years, although that also depends on the legal situation at the time (certainly since 2006).

There are a number of further options if they are still under 18.

I am a French national, my ex-wife has a right to abode in the UK. We moved here in 1991 (to the UK). My daughters are now 18 and 20, and yes they only have Canandian citizenship. They to have been living in the UK since 1991.
