Thought I'd share this with everyone seeing as though a lot of people are in the same boat...I am an American citizen with a British husband, for background info.

I basically just followed Lady Edwards list to the letter. I went out to Staples and bought a nice three ring binder with page dividers, some page protectors and spent a lot of time making sure everything was organized. As soon as I received the package from my husband containing his passport and some other bits, I put it all together.

I had a separate section for every category, ie, financial information, passports, etc. In the front of the notebook I created an index, so specific that it said, '6. Employment information: a. Letter from Spouse's Employer, b. Applicant's CV c. Current Job Postings' and along down the line.

I personally feel that what they look for most is that you have the financial means and ability to support yourselves and you won't become a drain on their government. Keep that in mind while you're compiling your info...sure it's great to prove you're a legit couple, but also prove you aren't going to suck the system dry...

For my timeline then...I made my online application March 27th, my biometric appointment was for the 31st. I went straight from the appointment to the post office and express mailed everything to the NYC office. I received an email stating they had the application at 5pm April 1st and an email saying I got the visa at 4pm April 2nd! Now, if that's not some sort of record...

Again, if anyone wants any help or advice, I'd be happy to give it. I think that Lady Edward's post answers everything and anything you could hope for. I know it's a stressful task but as long as you're organized and thoughtful, it is pretty straightforward.

    Good luck!!

When we moved from the U.S. in August this was also our experience. I filled out the application online (I'm the U.S. citizen and my wife the British) and then we compiled the info together. We had a tenancy agreement from my wife's mother who we were going to stay with until we found our own accommodation, as well well as a letter from her stating that this was fine.

We provided extensive financial information from several different banks. While we didn't organize it into a 3-ring binder, we used paperclips to organize the information.

After checking it thoroughly we mailed it off with a printed copy of the the online application (don't forget your money!). Within a week we had received my passport back with the visa pasted inside. There was even a little handwritten note reminding me to take the UK Test within 2 years so that there is no limitation on the length of the Visa.

We've recorded some of our lessons learned in two recent posts.

Can I just ask if you had to send your sponsor's original passport? I'm planning to send in my application asap after the wedding and biometric info from the States, but my soon-to-be husband will have to fly back to the UK for work. I can obviously send it more quickly if I can have a notarised copy, rather than waiting for him to express mail me his when he returns.

    Any advice?

    -Megan
