Forgive me if this has been asked many times, I did a search but didn't find much current information.

We'd like to spend a year traveling around Europe. We are both US citizens. We will be retired, with adequate, verifiable income and assets. We picture renting apartments in various countries, for at least a month per locale.

Is this possible? Is it advisable?

We have (distant) relatives in Sweden and Luxembourg, if that's any help.

I've looked at a lot of web sites that talk about a Residence Permit, but does that apply to people who will not be working? If so, how do you decide what country to apply in?

Thanks a ton for any ideas.

As US citizens you don't need a visa to go to Europe (in a lot of countries, a visa - when necessary - is delivered for 90 days for the same country, often extended to 6 months). So therefore, as you change countries often, you wouldn't have any difficulty.

Generally that should not be difficult, but there are a number of point to watch out for:
    • The standard Schengen visitor visa is valid for only 3 months, and then you have to spend 3 months out of Schengen before you can apply again. I think there are longer option, but they differ by country.
    • Since you are not in the US for at least half of the year, you may be classified as not resident there. This can have (good or bad) effects on all sorts of things, including health care, pensions and taxation.
That may help with getting a different visa.

    Thanks everyone!

I'm still a little confused though - if I am an American I don't need a visa...but does that mean I can stay as long as I like with just a passport?
