    Hi all,

I'm glad to have found this forum! I am in abit of a dilemma. My boyfriend and I are quite international. We are freelance professionals in fashion that travel where work is required. I am Malaysian and he is Finnish. We met working together in Paris 1 year and 8 months ago. We have been keeping in touch ever since via phone and email and once every few months I will go to Paris to visit him and he has come to London (where I am currently living and working) to visit me. Right now, he is working and living in Milan and I am between Spain and London. We have talked about getting married many times, but we are not sure which country would be the best option for us-London? Milan? Helsinki? Kuala Lumpur? or Australia(I'm a Resident there)? Where would you recommend?

We are strapped for cash right now and can't really afford a proper wedding, but we would like to be officially registered for now. Since our careers are in full swing in seperate countries, we are trying to decide which place is best efficiently and painlessly?! I hope maybe readers from this forum may be able to help shed some light into these different locations and their experiences :)

Also, if I was to move to Milan to be with him, would I need to apply for a Work Visa like in UK? Or would I be under EU law since I will be married to an EU citizen?

    Gratefully,

    D

    Welcome to the forum!

Well - as you are in London now, you will have found out that it isn't the place to be when you are strapped for cash. ;-)

If you get married, EU Directive 2004/38 will apply to you wherever you go in the EU apart from Finland. It might even work without getting married, but you'd probably have to prove that you have lived together as a couple for a while to qualify - but I'm no expert on that.

In the UK you would need a Certificate of Approval before you can get married. I guess the situation is similar in Australia, but you may find a country where it is easier. Fancy going to Vegas? You can get a wedding for 50 dollars there, I have been told.

Back in the "good old days" (i.e. 1995), we actually went to Britain because it was so much more easy to get married there than in Switzerland. One person needed to be in the country for 2 weeks, the other one for 24 hours - and all that was required was your passport. And we could have picked up witnesses from the pub next door. I guess things have changed slightly. ;-)

    Dear Sebastian,

Thanks so much for your reply :) I do wish sometimes life was much simpler like in the old days. But it just seems bureaucrats love to unnecessarily complicate things. I can't believe Britian was known to be the easiest place for marriage! It seems to be the most complicating from what I've read!

YES! DEFINATELY NOT THE PLACE TO SAVE MONEY! which is why I'm strapped for cash atm and trying to save on a honeymoon rather than a lavish wedding. However, career prospects are promising here for me which is why I'm here for a bit.

I find it surprisingly strange that EU Directive is not recognised in Finland. Does this have to do with Finnish State Laws taking precendent over EU Directive?

I was also told that we would have to live together for atleast 6 months. Would you know if this will apply in Italy?

    Dear thsths,

Thank you for your reply :) Vegas? But would that be recognised in Europe? 0.0

Again, so glad to hear your advice :) Thank you both!

    Kind Regards,

    Daezy

It's got to do with the fact that the directive deals with mobility of EU citizens (and their spouses) within the European Union. It therefore applies to all countries except the country of citizenship of the EU national. This often leads to the rather bizarre situation that foreign (EU) nationals - for example in the UK - are given greater rights (and with implementations at a lower cost - in principle, it's free) than "regular" citizens of their country of residence when their non-EU spouses want to join them.

No - sorry, no idea how Italy implements the rules.
    Good luck!

    Hi Sebastian,

Glad to hear from you again :) Thanks so much for your prompt response! That is an ironic law. I can't believe non-Eu spouses are treated better than local nationals :$ how bizarre. I'll try to google and see if I can find more about Italy.

Also, I'm thinking of doing a fashion course in Milan next year. Since we have to prove that we live together a certain amount of time before we can get married, I will have to apply for a Student Visa. Does anyone know whether I can work on an Italian student visa while studying?

    Thanks again!..

    Graciously,

    Daezy
