Hi to whoever is reading this!

    Ok,the basics first :
I'm a British Citizen and I've been with my American Citizen boyfriend for over 2 years (we've much evidence to support this and have met in person many, many times).
We're trying to plan a wedding for sometime in the summer of 2008.
We'd like the wedding to be in the UK (in Scotland) and here's where we're a little stuck...

Because my boyfriend is planning to go back to the U.S.A after we're married, for a little while,so we can save more money and fully decide on which country we're going to reside in,does he have to come over here on a fiancé Visa?
Or because he's not planning to stay here after the wedding, and it's his intention to return to the U.S after it,do we not need one?
Pretty much, our plan would be,after sending off our M10 Scotish marriage licence papers,he'd come here for 2 weeks, during that time we'd marry and have a little honeymoon in Scotland, then he'd go home.
Seeing as he'd not be staying here for 6 months,it just seems like a waste of money applying for a Fiancé Visa,as one doesn't seem to suit our situation.
I've tried to look this up on various web sites, but can't find anything that offers a satisfying answer, and i'm trying to put off calling the British Embassy for as long as possible, because it's expensive haha.

    Any info would be great,thanks!

    Hi there,

My british boyfriend and I decided to marry while I'm here on my visit visa, but discovered that I needed to be approved to marry him with something called a certificate of approval, or COA.

I'm not sure if your M10 scotish marriage licence papers are a differnt type of approval?

I wrote to a registrar and they did confirm that I could not be approved (because I have only one month left on my visit visa) and actually told me to come back on a fiance visa before scheduling a wedding.

From what I've read, it sounds like you can get married in the US without approval or any type of visa, and then he could return to UK on spouse visa or vise versa. That's the only way I've discovered avoiding a fiance visa altogether. (I'm from US btw)

On this site http://www.britainusa.com/visas/article ... 00&a=41191 it says that he will need Entry clearance as a Visitor-for-Marriage (if he intends to leave within 6 months)
    Good luck!

    Hi,thanks for your reply )

Yea,i ended up calling the Immigration and Border control help line the other day,and they pretty much told me the same thing.
I think we're just gonna have the wedding in the U.S now,and have a vow renewal or blessing in the UK at a later date,so my family can be there. We don't really want to waste the money on a fiancé Visa to marry in the UK because he won't even be staying here for 6 months,so it seems like a silly waste of time and money.

All the best for your situation too!
