I am currently living in France and studying the possibility to move to UK (London). I am a software engineer. After reading many of the postings on this forum and read the FAQs, I still have questions that I hope some of you might be able to help me with.

1. Work permit/Resident permit

Being french, I suppose I do not need a visa or work permit to work in UK. However, would I need a resident permit? Is it complicated to obtain for europeans?


2. Tax, social security, retirement plan

Assuming that I earn 50000 pounds. How much would I have left roughly when everything is deducted: tax, social security, health insurance, retirement plan.
I found a tax simulator on this site but it is unclear to me whether tax should be calculated against gross salary or after social security, health insurance, retirement plan etc are deducted. So I am inquiring about 2 things here:
- % of social security + health insurance + retirement plan. I read figures from 5% to 11% on this forum
- whether tax is calculated against gross salary or after social security etc are deducted

3. Cost of living

Is it safe to assume that one would be able to rent a 2 bedroom appartment for 800 pounds/month in zone 2?
