    Marriage in Morocco

In response to Vicky 1274's question...........

I am a UK citizen and have just married my husband who is Moroccan. The process can take forever locally, it depends how you deal with the rubber-stampers at the local level. It took us 6 weeks in total.....we were together the whole time continually chasing the paperwork to get it done, otherwise, the guys who deal with the paperwork will tell you themselves - unless you continually chase it, it won't be dealt with for months. At one stage we were told that it might be easier to leave the paperwork with them and come back in 3 months then it would be done....but how would you know unless you chase them? lol

I guess each locality is different, my husband is not from Agadir, so they may be quicker there, who knows?! I'd rather not be too specific about where my husband is from.....lol......

We also found it impossible to plan ahead, you don't know what the next step is until you complete the current one. It also makes it impossible to set a date for family/friends to come over......best to get the paperwork done first then have a party afterwards. There will be plenty to celebrate!

Some of the papers you will be asked for will be (you will need your English docs translated into French/Arabic, you can get this done over there):

employment - reference from current employer

    bank statements

police check (from your country and a Moroccan one for you)

    your birth certificate

    any previous marriage/divorce documents

other documents you will need to get in Morocco, but you will only be told about them as you get to each stage.....

Get your fiance to go to his local govt office in Agadir, they will give him a long list of the documents you both need to produce. You will need more documents than him...... :)

    Hope this helps.

I married my Moroccan husband in June in Morocco and am planning to apply for his visa in October. I can't go for a family permit as it takes about a year to get Irish Citizenship and a passport so we're just going through the UK embassy as I am a British Citizen. We have waited until now to apply because I ran up my overdraft to pay for the wedding and have been back and forth to Morocco about 7 times in the past year so I wanted to get my finances in order including the £500 application fee. I know there is a 3 month waiting list for an interview with the UK Embassy in Rabat and I have decided I will stay there with him for the 3 months.
When we apply I will show them bank statements, letter from Employer, etc and a tenancy agreement from the house I'm planning to rent. The only thing I'm worried about is whether we tell them I have been waiting with him as then they will know I haven't been working and therefore won't have as much money or a job in the UK. I work as a freelancer and get weekly pay, my job is in demand so I can easliy walk straight back into another job, this isn't a problem but I don't know if they will take my word for it. I don't want my husband to tell any lies in the interview, so I'm worried that if they say when did you last see her, for how long, etc and he says she's been with me the last 3 months, they may ask to see current bank statements. Can anyone advise me on the best way to approach this? I want to be honest, our application is 100% genuine and we just don't want to be apart any more.

For anyone wanting to get married in Morocco be prepared for a right drilling, we got married in feb 2007 it took us 3wks to have it just right and for the authorities to agree to it, the uk consulate site only tells u about a few of the papers you need with you. To get married be prepared to take from ur inpedement of marriage with you till a payslip. It is a very harrowing thing to go through nothing like a marriage here in UK, u go from consulate,to forgein affairs, to family court which was the hardest part of all.My husband had worked in south ireland for 6 yrs and im scots living in north ireland so i couldnt get irish passport, he wasnt allowed in uk with irish visa so thats why we married in Morocco, we got married put in for spouses visa and yes we were turned down even though he had a good history with his other visas, we also made sure we had all the proper papers in tack sent more than asked for but made no odds, we were more or less made out to have been a sham marriage.I travelled every wkend for 4yrs to be with my husband in the south his job took himall over south ireland. Entry clearance officer paid no heed to that,we are now appealing and our appeals tomorrow its taken from july 07 until now for appeal to be heard the appeals being heard here in north ans has been very costly, I saw someone said £1,000 its costing £1410 for us im just praying that this works cos this has been a nightmare for us both my husbands been in morocco since 13th jan 2007 and its taking its toll on him too. If i can help anyone with details or info i will just email me and i will get back to you i could type more but ask me and if i can help i will. I have firsthand experience of it . But dont let it put you off fight like i am and dont give up.

Thanks for your response. Well since my original posting we have also had bad news. Our interview was at the embassy on 4th Jan and they refused our application because they said I didn't have enough money in the bank. They said I was lying about the cost of going back and forth to Morocco as they know you can get a return flight for £100 (if only!) and that I used my overdraft to often which showed I wasn't responsible enough with money. So I am back in the UK again, alone. As I haven't been working I am very fortunate to be eligible for legal aid which I managed to secure yesterday after queuing at the Immigration Advisory Service in London, I would recommend anyone who needs legal help with an appeal go there because if you are eligible it will save you the £1400 it costs to have representation at the appeal. I have an appointment with an advisor in 2 weeks because our deadline is 1st Feb, I am hoping it will be pretty straightforward as we have only failed on the monetary side and I should be back at work by then. I am aware however that takes around 4-5 months to get a hearing date so I'm hoping we won't need one. I just feel lucky I spent that last 3 months with my hubby in Morocco, some people at the immigration place had been trying for over 3 years to get their spouse into the country. I feel for you having to prove your relationship and wish you all the luck in the world for your appeal hearing.
