How practical is it sending off passports for applications like this?

As many of you now well know, my fiance and I in the middle of finalizing her application to come to the UK from the US on a fiance visa.

Obviously as part of this I have to include my passport, which I'll be sending on to her (with all other documents) so she can put it together with her paperwork and assorted documents to go to the consulate in LA.

Does the passport come back ahead of time/fast-tracked? I say this because I aim to be with my fiance and family in the US for Christmas, regardless of the outcome. All goes well and she'll be coming back with me in the new year for keeps.

What if you're a businessman and need to travel all the time, or you've a holiday in the pipeline? Are they saying that you can't do any of this because you're applying for a visa?

    Seems pretty ludicrous to me.

So does anyone know if the passports are fast-tracked back after an initial check?

I'm not 100% sure about the US, however from China passports were not returned separately from the rest of the application.

As I needed use of my passport, I paid a solicitor to make a certified copy of my passport and sent that in instead. This is perfectly legitimate and was recommended by the Consulate in Shanghai.

You might want to consider this: find a solicitor who will operate as a public notary, get a copy made and send that in. Keep your original passport for travel later. It cost me £70 eighteen months ago to copy my passport and birth certificate in this manner.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just wondering if I can enclose some form of a covering letter declaring that I require my passport by a certain time.

I plan to get out to the States for Christmas to be with my fiancee, and it'd be a touch ironic if i couldn't because the consulate have my passport.

When I sent my passport in I got it back by fed ex in about 5 days. I sent it in to the LA British consulate and was living in Sacramento, CA so I don't know if distance was a factor.

    Thanks Alonia!

Does anyone know if a certified copy of the passport will suffice?
