I'm an American married to a UK citizen and we currently reside in the United States, where we got married almost 5 years ago. We want to move to the UK and we can apply for either the EEA Family Permit or a UK spouse visa for me to move over to the UK with her.

Simply, is there a benefit to doing it either way? I'd eventually like to be able to become a citizen there.

    Cheers!

Spouse visa to start with and you could apply for ILR immediately .

Once permanent residence (ILR) is achieved, there is no more immigration restrictions on your stay in the UK and there is no time-limit restrictions on your stay in the UK.

However in order to retain your UK residency staus you cannot leave the UK for a period longer than 2 years. It is expected that you should maintain your ties to the UK and consider the UK your home of permenant residency.

If you plan to spend your time outside of the UK after you are granted Permamenet residency then you should consider applying for uk citizenship (naturalisation) which you can do after being in the UK for not less than one year in permanent UK residency status.

    Triple H, you're my hero.

So, in other words, the spouse visa, then applying immediately for ILR in our case is a MUCH faster track to citizenship, right?

If I'm not mistaken, then, it sounds like the EEA FP is more of a broad way to move to the UK for many people, but since we have met the restrictions of the spouse visa, and have been married long enough, we can fast track the process.

Is that correct? Also, is the "ppron method" that I read about on another board a better solution? It certainly doesn't sound like it, but I was curious what you think. I can provide a link to it if you'd like.

It's so difficult to find definite information and I really appreciate your time and effort.

    Cheers!

Thats for the EU citizens, does not apply to you.

Once in the UK on spouse visa you could apply for a Indefinete Leave to Remain,ILR,as you`ve been married 4 years(I`may exercise this option) ;) --and if I can recall it after 1 year you can apply for a citizenship.[not sure about the last bit].

    Last thing, I promise!

About how long do people usually wait for a spouse visa to be issued after they have filed the paperwork? Is it a six month thing, or more like a two week timeframe?

    Cheers!

If all paper work in order it should not take long, few weeks.
We had people here given within few days as well as 8 weeks.
Also remember someone in Chicago given the very next day.
