I have looked and searched through the forums here but have not found the anwser's that I seek. It has been a very informative journey, even if I did not find my anwser.

Our situation:
We want to move to England and both work.
Our rough plan is to work/live in a friends pub for a month or so until we are settled.
During that time we will both look for full time work, me as an experienced Computer programmer and Kathrine as a very experience PA/Secretary.

My father is english, I was born in Australia and now have a British Passport.
2 years ago I married Kathrine my Australian wife, we have been together now for a total of 7 years.
Kathrine is just over the age limit for a Working Visa.
We have been told that Kathrine will need a settlement visa.
The visa forms indicate that we should be living together, in a property that we own ourselves or one that we are the only people living in.
The visa forms also indicate that we need to show that we can support ourselves financially.

Our questions:
1. Roughly how much money will we need to show them (if we don't have work lined up, if I have work lined up, if Kathrine has work lined up).
2. The 'support ourselves' question, is that covered off by a combination of our assured work and current cash savings?
3. What should be put down for the accomodation? I am guessing that the Pub will not cut it? Would a hostel do if we booked in there? I have some distant relatives in the UK, could I use their address?
4. I take there is no chance of Kathrine going over on a tourist visa then applying to settle?

I am looking for work at the moment. Trying to line up a programming contract before we go over.

Does everyone else agree that 10,000 pounds would be enough? That is the same figure that I had in my head.

 

For the interest of other people I will let you know how we got on.

We applied indicating that we do not have a fixed address yet, so all address fields were filled in as TBC. We got a bank statement with $35k AU and a statement from our managed fund showing $18k AU.

We got the visa approved in 1 week

We now have our flights booked and it is all looking great. Good luck to everyone else getting there visas.
