    Hello,

This is kind of tragic from my point of view. My girlfriend's "family" gave up and do not want to pay anymore for her college education.

College finishes in about 20~ days and this will be the last time that I'll see her because she'll not be able to study at the same college and it'll be completely pointless for me to stay in America if she cannot attend our college. (Moving to where she's going or doing what she might do is not possible)

We've touched this matter slightly, marriage, but I have several doubts.

I'm Spanish and I was born in Spain therefore I am a full citizen and an European Union member. I was thinking on transferring or applying to another college in The Netherlands and it wouldn't be a problem as I am an EU member, it'll be cheap.

She would be able to afford it IF, only IF, she would be a resident or EU member.
I thought about marriage but how do we go about this?

I mean, how do we get "officially" married or how do I obtain a special visa.. like.. fiancee visa for her to come with me to this university in The Netherlands & work / study there with me.

After this "fiancee" or "spouse" visa (Please, tell me how to obtain it) obtained... i think.. everything would be straight..

Oh, and... How long would it take? I know it is not instant magic but maybe 3-4 months? Or less?

    Thank you!!!!!

    Why hello dear! xD

I just called the Royal consulate of the netherlands, which informed me that we cannot marry unless you are either a citizen of the netherlands or a permanent resident.

I called the Spanish consulate multiple times with all 3 given phone numbers, but neither have answered. The phone call goes similar to this:

"If you don't know your party's extension, press 0 to talk to an operator.

((horrible funky music)) We're sorry, nobody is available."

    <<click>>"

So.......Perhaps you'll have better luck trying to reach them. I tried calling Monday and today.......

We will either have to marry here or in Spain. I would recommend calling the consulate to see if Spain would recognize your marriage abroad and if I could then have all legal documentation needed to obtain EU residency.

HOWEVER, if we must marry in Spain, I"m sure I can arrange for a slightly earlier departure. This is the webiste detailing all the information that I need as a U.S. Citizen.

    http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_763.html

I have not yet found what you need, but I"m sure we could find that out. Also, I am looking into what proceedings and documentation are needed to apply for residency following the marriage.

    Love you!
    Lindz

P.S. If we marry in Spain, "An average delay of 30 to 60 days should be expected after the following documents have been submitted and before the ceremony may be performed," according to the U.S. consulate general. Therefore we need to find out how long the application for a marriage license will take and also take into account the processing delay and the residency application time period (though I suspect the former will be taken care of by the school during enrollment time).
