    I need some advice quick. I have been married to this man who is supposed to be my husband sine Aug 2006. We went to Nigeria to marry, as my husband was here as an Illegal Immigrant. Since we got back things have changed. I am subject to beatings sometimes as much as three/four times a weekone was so bad that I had him arrested by the police, but because I love him so much I dropped the charges. The police issued him with a letter stating if he continues he will be deported back to Nigeria. He also although works, refuses to give any me any money towards food or living, will not buy anything for himself. He has just informed me that he wants no commitment to me.He is always threatening to move away and says that just because we are married does not mean that we have to live together. He is here on a two year spouce visa and is always trying to pick up women in the uk telling him that he is single. I feel that he has used me and do not want him to get his residency but dont know who to speak to. Is there anybody out there who is as stupid as me or can let me know which department I have to contact. If he moves out who I do I have to inform that we are no longer living together as husband and wife.

    Hello Debitom,

    I am so sorry to hear about your situation, but let me assure that not all Nigerian men are like your soon to be ex-husband.

    What a lot of women in Europe do not realise is that the majority of Nigerian men here illegally would do 'anything' to regularise their stay. So please do not in any feel used.

    I would suggest that you move in with your family and get as far away from him as possible. No one should stay with a violent partner. If you want to start divorce proceedings, go right ahead.

    I believe since it's pretty obvious he married you just to get residency, he should not be allowed to stay in the light of things.

    True love does not involve physical abuse, nor mental or emotional abuse for that matter. A relationship needs love, trust and respect for it to work. Clearly these 3 ingredients are not present in your relationship, at least from his side. And it takes two to tango.

    I highly suggest removing yourself from your current environment as it is not healthy for you. I also suggest speaking to a solicitor to start proceedings for annuling your marriage, or divorce if possible. PM me if you have any other concerns as this issue is very sensitive for public consumption.
