I am applying for UK passport but do not know where, in the Boston area, I can go for a photo -- they have lots of requirements now and I don't want my application rejected because of a bad photo.

So, you just need to provide what they call a ID photo, that you can make in machines available in the city probably.

I don't think that it is that as easy as the photo has to be a specific size -- different than that of an American passport.

These are the requirements for a UK passport photo. Any good photography studio should be able to do these. One point to raise is the background the website says "off-white, cream or light grey plain " I would suggest to stay away from the cream or light grey colours. Most British embassies state a white background.

Applicants must submit two identical photos, which have been taken in the last month.
The photos should be printed on normal photographic paper and should be 45 mm x 35 mm in size.
The photo should show a close up of the applicant´s head and shoulders so that their face covers 65-75% of the photo.
It should be taken against an off-white, cream or light grey plain background so that the applicant´s features are clearly distinguishable against the background.
The photo must be of the applicant on their own, with no other people visible. It must show their full face, looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression, with their mouth closed.

I went to my local CVS in Everett, MA... on one of their machines there was a setting for 3.5cm x 4.5cm (actually its inches equivalent). Check it out!
