    My paternal grandparents were from Cornwall and immigrated to the US in the early 1920s. They NEVER became US citizens and in fact were Resident Aliens when they died. I know my father was able to and did claim dual citizenship. He had both a US and UK passport when he passed away a few years ago. I would like to live and possibly work in London. I am a legal assistant specializing in Intellectual Property. I know there are tons of American firms there and if I had the ability to work there, I would have no problem finding a job.

    What are my chances? I would rather do this legally. I know I can't take the ancestry route because my grandparents came to the US rather than a Commonwealth country. Somehow it seems unfair that only people from New Zealand and the like are able to get residency permits.

    I'm equally puzzled that US citizens do not seem to be welcome anywhere!! From what I have seen and heard, it's a lot easier to come here than it is to go anywhere else.

    Can anyone help??

    We had lots of Americans last couple of years that others and myself advised about the move to EU ,either through marriage , work permit scheme or ancestory..They would probably disagree with your statement.

    Hmm, when I read your reply yesterday there seemed to be more to it. What happened to the rest of what you wrote Triple H?

    I would also like to say, in my defence, that I am not being rude when I say Americans aren't welcome. You've never struck up a conversation with someone, who then enquires about your nationality and when you tell them you're American, they roll their eyes and walk away. That was not an isolated incident either. One time I told someone I was Canadian and you should have seen the look of relief!! That was my experience.

    And just so you understand, I am considered "too nice" over here. I am not overly aggressive and/or loud.

    This was just a simple question(s) and I felt you were attacking me.

    I apologise if you feel I am being too aggressive.

    That was not my intention.
    Couple of weeks ago we had another person claiming similar things about US citizens.Perception that you are "unwelcome" I think is unfounded.
    But then again this is just my opinion.You obviously feel and think different.

    Regarding people from New Zealand and Australia,yes they can come to UK and work for a year and travel for a year(up to age of 26 ) I think..After that they have to go back.

    Trying to prove UK Ancestry

    My paternal grandfather is British - I think.

    He was born of Irish parents in British South Africa. When he was 6 years old, they moved to London. Later, during WWI my great-grandfather fought in the British Army.

    I am very interested in trying to obtain dual citizenship but can not find out if I am eligible. I have sent emails to consulates and received no reply.

    Does anyone have any information on this? Please let me know.

    moving to the UK

    Hi! I am considering moving to the UK also but only because I can hold a British passport (through my British birth certificate). Without one, (or the appropriate visas etc.) I would not even make the attempt to move. However, from what I have found from checking with the British Embassy and the American State Department, I think that I will be fine. For you, with both parents born in the UK, I cannot imagine that you couldn't apply for a British passport through your parents, ( I think that it might be called a heritage passport) and, once you have that, things should go more smoothly. However, I am not sure how long you would be able to stay. Please do not consider what I say to be 'fact', only what I percieve to be true from the agencies that I have been in touch with. Also, I was born in England to a British parent so my take is different. Good luck!
