My husband and I reside in Calif...we are considering Italy, Ireland or England to live and hopefully work. He works in the technical field and I volunteer with a non profit mental health organization...we both use our PCs nearly 100 percent of the time for all work related duties.
We are open to reconsidering a total change in careers if necessary and if it would provide us with a decent living...we aren't opposed to living a simpler more stress free existence!
Neither of us have jobs that would relocate us...but I am half Italian...(my grandparents emigrated to NY from Italy and I'm told there are family members of both Grandfather and Grandmother still there). How do I go about using my heritage as a route to becoming an expatriate?
We would like to buy a little home in any of these countries, live and retire there. Could anyone advise on how to go about doing this on what I've detailed here??
    Thankyou~

    Well thats a question & a half g0lden0rb

I think you need to look to your interests & passions & decide what you'd like to do before even considering where to go. Then research, research, research. You've obviously made a start by coming hear.

Try the following for some help & idea's :

    Living Abroad Secrets of Success

They are both on my site but I think they may help.

Let me know how you get on,

    Regards
    Pete

    Thanks Pete,

Its been awhile since I've gotten back here to read the site. I will check out the links you've listed. We are also adding Scotland to our wish list.

Have you made the move already?

    Hi GoldenOrb

The west coast of Scotland has some stunning scenery. If you're prepared to brave the extremes of weather I'm sure you'll love it. If you're planning on buying property, you might want to take a look at Alan Forsyth's site: http://www.property-investment-tips.com/Scotland-Property.html

No, not quite. We have 4 weeks to go. Just waiting to exchange contracts on the house, sell off the cars, motorbike, rest of furniture etc.

We've bought some land in Bodrum & are venturing into property development.

    Can't wait :)

Couple moving to Italy, Ireland, or England

    Hi, GoldenOrb--

My husband and I moved to Ireland over two years ago. Getting residence in Ireland was not difficult. We needed to show what our income was, proof of having our own health insurance, and proof of a rental or purchased home here. Getting permission to work here is MUCH more difficult and nearly impossible. Getting residence in Italy is nearly impossible -- I forget the name of the website with all the sad examples -- something like Expats in Italy -- in fact, that's probably it.
    Don't know about England.

Re: American couple wants to live in Italy, Ireland or Engla

You mention that you're half-Italian. The easiest way to move to any of the European Union countries you mentioned would be to see whether you have a claim to Italian citizenship. Italian citizenship is passed on by descent, so you may qualify. You don't say whether you are Italian on your father's side or mother's. A female can only pass Italian citizenship on to a child born after January 1, 1948. Other than that, the most important thing is...was your Italian parent born before or after his/her parent became a U.S. citizen? If before, your parent never inherited Italian citizenship because your grandparent lost it. If after, you're in luck. What you'll need are birth & marriage certificates for yourself, your Italian parent, and your grandparents. Everything then needs to be translated into Italian and sent to the Italian consulate for your area. The documents are sent to Italy for registration and after that you're Italian. Your husband will also qualify to be registered as an Italian citizen based on being married to you (if you've been married for 3 years, I think it is). You can then live & work anywhere in the European Union. If you need more info, let me know.

Thank you so much for all of your feedback and interest.

It was my Father who was Italian, not my mother. I do believe his own father became a US citizen before HE was born. I think this because my Grandfather was in the US military for a short while but didn't read or speak a lick of english. But I don't know if my fathers mother ever got her citizenship...or would that have happen naturally by being married to someone who became an American?

So I don't know if I could still qualify if it was my grandmother who never actually applied for American citizenship but her husband had earlier on?

Wish this thing was easier. Seems like here in the states, people from all over come to live here...but unless you meet very narrow criteria - Americans can't do the same abroad.

    It's OK to disagree. :)

I've lived in NY, in the South, in Florida and in So. Cal...and I've met ExPats from all over the world who have come to reside here. Most have lived here for some time. In addition our country turns a blind eye on many immigration issues - although in recent years it has gotten more attention. Amnesty...is offered as an option when all else fails. Now, I don't know alot about it and I don't wish to debate the details but from what I can see - it is far easier to experience the American culture on a long term basis than it is for an American who independently (meaning does not have a work or family connection allowing them to be there)wants to long term experience or live in another country (I'm referring more to Euro countries).

    GO.

    Returning to the States

We have spent two-and-a-half very pleasant years in Ireland, but are now returning to the States. Although, difficult as it is to get, we did get permission to work here, but simply cannot make enough to supplement the downward-sliding $ to € ratio. We're moving to a different part of the States than where we left from (incidentally where it's about as Irish as you can get without actually living in Ireland), so this will be a new and interesting experience for us.

I'd like to hear more about your 2 years in Ireland and your returning to the states. Would you mind if we emailed one another?

    Thank you.
