    Hello,
I am a Maldivian girl currently studying in London. My partner of 4 years who is French (and working in London) and I are thinking of getting married but dont know how to get about it due to all the rules and regulations! I read on this website that I will need a special visa to be able to get married. I have also heard that I will need to live in France for a month. Is this right? If I do get the permission to marry in UK do I still need to continue to have my student visa or do I get permission to live here as a dependent of some sort? How long does this whole procedure take?

    Many thanks!

If you want to get married with a French citizen and you live in London, the best thing is to go to the Consulate (see their website, the address is on EasyExpat, and take an appointement) and ask for all the information.

You can easily get married in London at the consulate, or you can go to France and arrange a wedding at the town hall where the relatives of your partner live.

    Hi there,

Is it possible to get married in the French consulate if only one person is French and the other is not? I am typin this with assumptions that all consulate have the same rulings.

The French Consulate in Kuala Lumpur stressed that both have to be French.

    Well pickache, update us.

    Regards

As the Consulate is a sort of Town Hall abroad (the Consul is "officier d'état civil"), and you need to get married in Town Halls to register your wedding in France, I would have assumed (wrongly?) that it is the case. However as you spot the issue, I looked at the Consulate website and did not find any information on that indeed.

But as I said, it is easy to check with the "Etat Civil" department of the consulate. They say that they publish the marriage notice before the wedding in the consulate area, so it needs clarification.

    :?: :!:
The "Pacte civil de solidarité" (PACS)
    (Civil union)

    WHAT IS THE PACS?

The PACS is a contract drawn up between two persons over the age of 18, of different or same sex, in order to organize their life together. It gives rise to rights and obligations for both partners, particularly in regard to "mutual and material assistance".

I was contemplating getting married under French law. Basically I have French and British nationality, and live in Edinburgh. My partner is a US citizen. I went to my mother's town hall in France and was told that to marry in France you need to have been resident in that area (yourself, not your family) for a certain number of months. So I then tried the Consulate in Edinburgh - they told me they only publish the banns and register marriages in Britain. Also, you need to submit a file of paperwork a few moths beforehand to the French, very complex and time-consuming, before they'll even considering accepting your marriage. It might be different in London, but anything administrative is usually fraught with hassle when it comes to French beaurocracy (I'm not being rude - I have lived in a few areas in France and this is my experience). So basically, because we couldn't afford a British fiance visa for my partner, we ended up going to the US and marrying there, submitting the dossier to the French Consulate (which still hasn't got back to us after two months). Just a warning that to get married under French law is complicated and drawn-out.
I'm not sure about the PACS, it may be easier. Good luck whatever you try!

Anyway.. Im really impressed about how many responses I have got so quickly.

I wish you all the best and will let you know when we tie the knott!
