How does credit work when you move abroad? I am moving from the U.S. to the UK - do I start with a clean slate in that country??

What do you mean ? In term of personal credit record if you want to borrow money in England ? In theory you start with a clean sheet, but sometimes at the beginning banks might be tricky and say that they cannot lend you money mecause you do not have credit record...

EasyExpat is right. I moved here form the US about 2 months ago and still have to open a bank account. Well recently I can because I now have "proof of residence" via a tenancy agreement with a landlord. But as for credit score, you and I both start from the bottom rung of the ladder. My 700+ credit score in the US doesn't matter, as, like I mentioned, it's form the US and we're not there anymore.

Welcome to the UK! And welcome to this forum, hopefully we can answer whatever questions you may have about moving here and adjusting to your new life.

    Cheers!

As an expat spouse, yes credit ratings start again where-ever you go, even here in the EU which is supposed to have no borders to services and work etc!

I would suggest though that you intend to return to the States to maintain a credit card plus bank account there too - small amount of credit payable in small monthly amounts. It helps with credit on returning home. If you close all credit accounts/ bank accounts on leaving, you'll find when you return to US that you will have to start again with credit (so I believe).
