    Salut tiboti,

As far as I know, if you want to insure your car with a particular company, you will be required to register your car in that country.

    In other words:

    - "Assurance Voiture S.A.", Paris: you need to register your car in FR.
    - "Car Insurance inc.", London: you need to register your car in UK.

However, in my experience, insuring your car in the UK only grants you protection in the UK. If you travel abroad (back to FR?) you are only covered "third party" and this, only for a limited time. If you require a longer period, you will have to request a "green card" and pay extra for it. This appears to be exactly the same as an "EU" insurance certificate.

Insuring your car in a EU Member state (other than UK) covers you across the whole of the EU and EFTA, including the UK.

I know this sounds strange but it's what I discovered when I moved from the UK to BE.

Since your car is FR registered, it would seem easier to insure it in FR. But I would call a FR company to check this.

As for registering your car in the UK, there is a lot of info here:

    http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/vehicles.htm

To permanently import your car, there is a lot of paperwork, but you should be able to avoid this if it is only temporary (6-12months).

    Good luck!

Car insurance for a vehicle not yet registered in the UK can be difficult to arrange. Most UK insurers will not insure a car that does not have a UK registration number. The problem is that the DVLA will not register a car without proof of UK insurance - a vicious circle.

A J Insurance Service - (0870) 444 3511 can offer annual motor insurance for cars being imported into the UK. Cover is issued initially on the basis of the chassis number - this allows the DVLA to register the car.

This is a very flexible and competetively priced policy, which can also include cover for use in all other EU countries- annual green card cover -with no time restrictions.
