Amélia Delagrange, 22 ans, suivait des études d’anglais à Londres. Jeudi soir, elle a été retrouvée agonisante dans un parc de Twickenham après avoir été frappée à la tête. Les circonstances de sa mort rappellent plusieurs agressions commises dans des lieux voisins

Amélia Delagrange a-t-elle été victime d’un tueur en série ?

Les enquêteurs londoniens ne l’excluent pas. Cette Française âgée de 22 ans, originaire de la grande banlieue parisienne, et qui vivait à Londres où elle étudiait l'anglais, est morte dans la nuit de jeudi à vendredi dans un hôpital londonien, quelques heures après avoir été frappée à la tête avec un objet contondant par un inconnu dans un parc de Twickenham, un quartier bourgeois de la capitale britannique. Une agression et une mort qui rappellent étrangement plusieurs agressions similaires…

Des circonstances exactes de l’attaque mortelle subie par la jeune femme, on sait peu de choses. Amélia Delagrange a été découverte agonisante par un passant jeudi à 22h30. Elle avait pris peu avant un autobus, après un rendez-vous avec une amie dans un bar. Les enquêteurs supposent qu'elle a traversé le parc pour rentrer chez elle. Et ils ont fait le lien avec l’agression d’une autre jeune femme, Marsha McDonnell, tuée en février 2003 à l'âge de 19 ans non loin de ce même parc, là aussi après avoir été frappée à la tête par un objet contondant. Evoquant l'hypothèse d'un même auteur, un enquêteur de Scotland Yard a déclaré que "rien de particulier ne reliait les différents faits à ce stade, mais c'est bien sûr une piste importante pour l'enquête".

Un suspect interné à tort ?

Problème : un adolescent de 16 ans a été arrêté, en mars 2004, dans le cadre de l'enquête sur l’agression de Marsha McDonnell. Il est interné depuis dans un hôpital psychiatrique. Mais déjà en janvier 2003, un mois avant le premier meurtre, une jeune fille de 17 ans avait été grièvement blessée à la tête. Une nouvelle agression similaire s'était déroulée en avril 2004, visant cette fois une femme de 34 ans. Si un lien devait être établi entre toutes ces agressions, et si l’hypothèse du tueur en série se confirmait, il faudrait admettre que l’adolescent interné n’était pas le bon coupable…

Des dizaines de policiers poursuivaient samedi leur recherche de témoins et d'indices dans le voisinage des lieux du crime. L'arme qui a tué Amélia Delagrange, notamment, reste introuvable. Un jeune homme qui avait échappé à une agression peu après le meurtre de Marsha McDonnell avait décrit "un outil spécialisé ressemblant à un marteau".

Murder victim 'missed her stop'

A young French woman was killed after she failed to get off the bus at the right stop, police believe.
Emilie Delagrange, 22, was found with head injuries on Thursday night, less than an hour after she was last seen.

Police believe she met her murderer as she cut across Twickenham Green in south west London, to get home.

It follows three other similar attacks on women in the area in the last 18 months and police are investigating possible links between the incidents.


Police said Ms Delagrange boarded the 267 bus but did not get off at her stop.

She was seen getting off at Fulwell Bus Garage at 2153BST, half an hour before her body was found by a passer-by near the cricket pitch on the green.

Her handbag and Sony Ericsson T300 mobile phone are missing and police say their recovery is "immensely important".

They have not ruled out links to the murder of Marsha McDonnell in nearby Hampton in February 2003. She was bludgeoned to death near her home in an apparently motiveless attack after getting off a bus.

A month earlier a 17-year-old girl survived serious head injuries from an attack in nearby Strawberry Hill.

No-one was charged although a 16-year-old boy was arrested in March 2003 in connection with those two attacks and is still being detained under the Mental Health Act.

On Friday police revealed a 34-year-old woman was found with serious head injuries near Twickenham Green after a night out in April.

Although no property was stolen in the other attacks, Det Ch Supt Andy Murphy said that did not mean they were dismissing the possibility Thursday's murder could be linked.

"It's clearly a main line of investigation for us and officers from the Marsha McDonnell murder inquiry and the attack in April are working with us on this investigation."

But he added it was still to early to say Ms Delagrange's death was linked, carried out by a copycat killer, or unrelated to the earlier attacks.

Extra police patrols are being put on in the Twickenham area and Det Ch Supt Murphy said CCTV cameras were being "deployed" and other steps taken to re-assure locals.

And he urged people to be "aware of who is around you" and avoid darkened areas and open spaces when out alone.

Ms Delagrange, who lived and worked in Twickenham, had been in Crystalz wine bar on London Road, in Twickenham, on Thursday.

Police want anyone who saw Ms Delagrange, who had shoulder-length blonde hair and was wearing a red top and white trousers, get on or off the bus to contact them.

Her family is expected to fly over from France over the next few days.
