Cities increase in popularity if top attractions are easily accessible and don’t require the added cost and inconvenience of transport. There are already many cities around the world that have adopted these principles and are called pedestrian cities.

These cities, like Copenhagen, have specially designated areas that are virtually car-free, and people can amble along admiring their surroundings without the constant honking of vehicles or even the threat of being run over.

A network of picturesque pedestrian streets that have shops, restaurants, markets and coffee shops makes living very convenient, pleasant and offers a high quality of life.
It fosters a sense of community, and improves the area’s social life and economy.

Do they have a pedestrian zone where you live?

Thanks for this article.
I have just read in The Guardian a study about the most walkable cities in the world.
According to the British newspaper, the top five major cities by closeness to car-free places (within 100m) are:

Hong Kong, China

Moscow, Russia

Paris, France

Bogotá, Colombia

London, UK

Hong Kong took the top spot with 85% within 100m, with Moscow, Paris and London completing the top five.

Top five major cities by closeness to healthcare and education (within 1km)

Paris, France

Lima, Peru

London, UK

Santiago, Chile

Bogotá, Colombia

The report found US cities ranked particularly low for walkability due to urban sprawl.

Funny enough the third ranking is about the building heights as they say:

smaller blocks make it easier for people to walk directly to their destinations without detours around large buildings. Here, Khartoum in Sudan scored highest, followed by Bogotá, Lima, Karachi in Pakistan and Tokyo in Japan.

Of course London is no appearing in this ranking as the city has encouraged hundreds of skyscrapers (most of them for luxury apprtments) in the lst decade!
