✎ EN Tax Problem

    My wife and I received a tax refund in Belgium from 2010, in 2012. Soon thereafter we received a noticed that taxes were owed for the same year. So, they paid us and then wanted it back. I was in touch with them and they said to wait. Now, I've received another taxes due note. It's pretty frustrating but if we live outside of Belgium, can they actually find us and try to make us pay via our bank or host country?

    Any help would be really appreciated.

    Dealing with tax officers can be very frustrated.
    If you do not leave in Belgium, have no links with the country anymore... and does not owe them anything (if you have already paid back what was claimed) there should not be any issue.
    However if the worse comes it can cause problems in term of border control and travelling within the EU if you become labelled as "tax fraud".
    That's why I always recommend to sort out the issue with the Belgium tax office.

    Thanks Cyrille, I was able to work this out with the tax authorities and paid the balance. Glad to have it behind me!
