Hi, I am after some advice on tax from anyone in the know. I am a British citizen who has been working in Qatar since May 2010. However I have recently been offered a job In Australia which would begin in July 2011. I understand the tax rules in the UK i.e. I must remain a non-resident for a full tax year. However does anyone know the implications of relocating to Australia. By entering their tax system, would any of my Qatari earnings become liable to Australian tax? Obviously if this was the case, I would not consider moving. If anyone could provide guidance or point me in the direction of some information it would be much appreciated. Thanks
I believe you will not be taxed on earnings in Australia since it is not yet your tax residence. However, should you need any assistance from Centrelink (unemployment assistance, etc..) your earnings for the financial year will take Qatar income into consideration. Foreign income Australian residents are taxed on their worldwide income so you must declare all foreign-source income in your tax return. Also, any tax you are currently paying will be taken into consideration. Have a look at this website to give you some info on whether you will be considered resident or not. It depends on visa you use when you come to Australia. You may ask those questions to ATO on line.
