I am new to this forum and am seeking some honest advice. I will be taking a job with a British company and need to be in London mid-March 2005. I have done as much research as possible and keep finding that my dog has to be in quarantine for 6 months. I will have a microchip installed tomorrow and blood drawn for the initial rabies test. Assuming she is fine, which she is, is there any way around keeping her in quarantine for 6 months? It doesn't make sense that every dog coming into the UK needs to be quarantined so long. The DEFRA website is of no help.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

I have read the PETS Scheme guidelines throughly by myself and with my Vet. I guess my real question is if there is any way to reduce the 6 month period that my dog needs to be in the US or in the UK quarantine. From what I can tell, the dog can stay w/ friends here as long as she is following the procedures to meet thet 6 mth requirement. She can also come to the UK right away and stay in quarantine for 6 mths.

I was hoping to limit the total time that she will be away from me and my wife. I can understand needing to monitor her 6-8 weeks. But 6 mths is overkill. Are there any loop holes?

According to what they say, once the vet has issued the PETS documentation and that six month period has passed, the PETS documentation is valid for your pet to enter the UK. as I said earlier, you are not subject to the quarantine period.

On the other hand, you must have 6 months passed between the blood test and the entry in the UK. Therefore if you do the test now, and you are moving in 1 month time for example, it will be only 5 months to wait until you get your dog back with you. i am afraid that there is no other way... :(

    Hi LB,

Unfortunately there is no way you can move your dog with you in March. You will have to wait six months as explained before.

This new rule is not really a quarantine. Your dog does not have to go to a kennel or whatsoever, it can stay with friends in the US.

I agree with you it is stupid but you have to see it in a positiv way, it is much better than the previous rule, where your poor dog was supposed to stay six month in quarantine, somewhere in a dog kennel in UK, where you could not really visit it, and which was very expensive.

All the best for your new life in England and be patient. Hopefully you know good friends where you can leave your dog!

    Cheers,

    Chichi
