Hiya - I am a bit uncertain about this so I hope someone can help!!!

I am engaged to a Moroccan woman who is obviously Muslim but I am Jewish and British. Does anyone know if it is illegal to marry? :(

It is not illegal but quite complicated. The civilian marriage should not be a problem at all, I don't have any specific knowledge but you must have seen so many cases of Muslim men marrying Christian/Jew women wherein religion is not a problem at all so the same should be the other way round. But it also depends on where do you want to marry, I will definitely not recommend getting married in Morocco, I would rather advise you not to do it. Even in UK, Sharia courts are about to be introduced ( even though I am not sure when ) but if that happens, then marriage will be one of the matters which will be under the jursidiction of such courts and the family of your fiance can cause you legal problems in case they move to such court. ( The quick common sense solution is that you should get married before that or in some other country ). All in all, civilian marriage should not be a problem in any non-Muslim country.

However, religious marriage is where the pain lies. I am not sure what Jewish belief says about it but under Sharia, its very unclear. It has not been clearly prohibited anywhere in the Holy Quran or Sunnah and hence according to the Islamic tradition, it has been left to the scholars for interpretation. Some scholars say its allowed, some say its not but majority of them agree that even though this is allowed, its still not recommended. So this is very crude and has to be looked into on a case to case basis. The biggest reason that scholars have given against such marriage is that the Christian/Jew husband will be hindering the religous beliefs/practice of his muslim wife, for example Christian/jew belief doesn't even recognize Prophet Mohammad as a prophet. Secondly and more painful is the religion of children, according to muslim belief, children of such a couple have to be muslim because they are children of a muslim but Christian/Jew belief says they have to be Christian/Jew.

I don't want to go into details because I am not a scholar :D but I will suggest you do some thinking and look into all the problems that might come because of such relationship. It of course depends on how religous you and your fiance are and how much you are ready to compromise but if you ask me, I will say 'do what makes you happy'

    wish you all the best

There is no chance of you having legitimate religious wedding, as the previous poster said. The only wedding that would be really accepted would be a civil marriage. Your children, assuming you have any, would be neither Jewish nor Muslim. Islamic law says that Islam is passed down through the father, whereas Jewish law says i'ts through the mother. So from the Jewish perspective, they'd be Muslim, and from the Muslim perspective, they'd be Jewish.

It may be much simpler for you to become a Muslim. Ramadan Mubarak.
