✎ EN Can Same Sex Partner of EU Nat Work in UK for 1-2 months?

    Hi there

    My same sex partner holds a Netherlands passport as her grandparents are from there but was born in Canada. I am Australian.

    We are thinking of moving to the UK to live but would like "try it out" for 1-3 months and want to find out if I will be allowed to work casually during this time?

    We are considered common law here in Canada but have been thinking about going into a Civil Partnership and doing it in the UK on a visit.

    Does anyone know what we need to do to make sure I am legally allowed to do some work while we are there? Also, if I decide to take a trip on my own, am I legally allowed to work in the UK?

    The visa you need is the EEA Family Permit, and you should find a lot of information on it. It is valid for 6 months, and you are allowed to work, although some employers take some convincing. Get the EEA Family Permit is a bit more difficult is you apply from outside of the EU (do you?).

    Registering a Civil Partnership in the UK is a bit difficult, because you need a long term visa first, and then have to apply for a Certificate of Approval. But you should qualify for the visa even without the partnership if you have been living together for 2 years and can prove it.
