I am a US citizen and my fiance is British. We are wanting to go abroad to get married. I did some web surfing and it looks like it's easy to get married in Australia, Sri Lanka, and India, and Jamaica. Just not sure if you have to be the same nationality. We are planning as of now to reside in America. Will the US recognize our marriage? Will the UK recognize it if I decide to move there in a few years?

Why don't you just marry in the US? Very little, if no red tape when processing your marriage certificates, plus your British partner can go there without a visa under the 90 day visa waiver program. Get married there, get your marriage certificate, then apply for a spouse visa through your British partner. Your marriage will be recognized in the UK so long as you have your marriage certificates with you. In some states, they have a a "3-seal" certificate, signed and certified by more people in the city government office, and used specifically for international recognition of the certificate. I come from Northern VIrginia, and had the "3-seal" version, which was a bit more expensive than the regular certificates, but wanted to make sure. I'm alreayd here in London, and no problems with the marriage papers so far.

    more info

I'm in a really similar situation, and it looks like it's easier for my Britsh finace to come to the US to marry me. I haven't been able to find good information on this, though, so I have a couple of questions.
Is it necessary for him to have a visa to come to the US to get married, even though he will remain a British citizen? If so, how far in advance should he apply for the visa? (We're planning to get married this summer.)
Also, can he apply for a finance visa while we are both in the UK, or do I need to be in the US for some reason?
