Help ! We are moving from Italy to London next year. I have two girls aged 10 and 12 who have been fully immersed in the Italian state system. They speak fluent English but read and write poorly. They also speak, read and write Italian perfectly.

They will not qualify for entrance in medium priced schools if they have to compete against English children. We cannot afford the 15,000 pounds a year per child for the international school. Apparently there is no Italian school in London.

What should I do ??? Has any one had this problem ?

Are you Italian? They should be able to go to an English school. Why do you think that they will have to compete? Some examples on the forum have shown that the language is not really a problem at this age.

Regarding International Schools, they might not be that expensive... Did you look at the French Lycée? It is about £1000 for 3 months.

O.K. but the French Lycee doesn't help because they need to read and write in French to go there. My girls only read and write properly in Italian although they speak fluent English.

I have understood that the good schools with Fees under 7000 pounds a year all require an entrance exam. My girls will not have a chance of getting a place against children who have been in English schools all their lives.

Does any one know of a school that can tutor foreign students to gain places in English schools or have any other solutions ? We can pay some fees but not 15,000 each child which is what the big international schools want.

Not all. It all depends on the area. You can find a state school with good education that doesn't require such exam.
You can also contact the Italian Institute in London for information.

Do contact me. I know other families in a similar position ... if there are enough of us we may be able to set up our own school! Alternatively (and maybe more realistically) you could try the Spanish School in Kensington (Instituto Español Cañada Blanch). Much lower fees, and a chance of getting in (unlike the Lycee, which is totally full).
