This is actually a bit late, but I was transferred at the beginning of 2004 to France with my company. I (clearly wrongly) thought they would sort out the required paperwork. However I have just found out that they have done precisely nothing.

I am still paid from the UK and am struggling with the Inland Revenue to claim back the tax I paid between Jan and March. However that is another story.

What I was wondering was whether anyone could help me with regard to registering in France. I understand I no longer need a carte de séjour, but do I have to register with the mairie or anything? And most importantly, how do I go about registering for tax? I need a form from them saying I am resident here to claim back the UK tax, but I'm assuming I need to register with them first. I've searched the web for any indications, but to no avail.

    Thanks for any help.

the first thing to consider is the tax year:

in France it runs from 1st of January to 31st of December.
in the UK it runs from 6th of April to 5th of April.
In France Income tax is not paid through your payslip, but at the end the year when you complete your Tax Return = Déclaration d'impots

this means that you were still resident in the UK for tax purpose until April 2004. The Good thing is there is a double taxation agreement between France and UK, tax never have to be paid twice.
In your situation I reckon that you have to pay you tax to the Inland Revenue in the UK up to 5th of April and prove that payment to the French authorities when you fill your french tax return in February 2005.

And not the other way round !
