I am a UK resident, in assignement in France for 6 months to a year. I am trying to find a car insurance that would cover my UK registered car in France (or even better, Europe) for the duration of my assignement. Anybody ever heard of any? I heard that the Netherland might offer this, but I cannot find any .
All UK car insurance policies give drivers basic third party cover in Europe. In addition, most insurers will extend the level of UK cover when their customers go abroad, giving comprehensive policyholders protection for their own car when driving throughout Europe.
For several months, it shouldn't be a problem to drive with your English insurance extended to cover France and the rest of Europe.
However if you want to shop around you can also ask information to Axa, the first insurance company in France but also available in UK throught its subsidiary.

I have a policy through AXA with AA Insurance which gives me cover for the whole year in almost all europen countries. But I can tell you it is not cheap, for fully comprehensive cover with full no claims discount and discount protection I am paying in excess of £500 a year for an 11 year old Ford Maverick.
Insurance cover to use vehicles in all EU countries is available through A J Insurance Service (0870) 444 3511. Vehicles must be registered in the UK, and the policyholder must be a UK citizen.
There is no limit on the number of days use outside the UK.
This is ideal for someone with a holiday home outside the UK, or for someone working between the UK and other EU countries.

Be careful because you are only covered 3rd party automatically if you are travelling in europe for social visits or holidays.
If however you are commuting to a place of work in europe, you may be in breach of your policy and not be covered. Please check if your europe cover is social or commuting.
