Mi chiamo Fabio, sono nato a Padova. Attualmente vivo nel sud est asiatico, la maggior parte del tempo tra Thailandia e Malesia.

1. Perché ti sei trasferito all'estero?
Non c'è una ragione particolare. E' stato un impulso, qualcosa di piuttosto irrazionale. Credo di averlo fatto più che altro per curiosità e irrequietezza.

2. Come ti guadagni da vivere?
Insegno qualche corso di formazione come free lance. Ma non è un'occupazione stabile.

3. Quanto spesso e come comunichi con la tua famiglia?
Una o due volte la settimana, con MSN messenger, Skype o SMS.

4. Cosa ti piace di più della tua vita da espatriato?
Dal momento che non ho un lavoro stabile e non so nemmeno con sicurezza se sarò ancora qui domani – o la prossima settimana – non mi considero un espatriato. Non mi piace nemmeno essere chiamato viaggiatore, dal momento che non sono certo all'altezza di gente come Marco Polo o James Cook. Sono stato in molti posti e vivo spesso lontano da casa perché va bene così, e mi sembra che per ora sia la cosa giusta da fare. Sono partito, ho trascorso del tempo all'estero e mi ci sono in un certo senso abituato, ma potrei cambiare idea e tornare in Italia in qualsiasi momento.

Bisogna tuttavia ammettere che Bangkok è un posto interessante. Nonostante sia rumorosa, caotica, inquinata e abbia un traffico fortemente congestionato, resta comunque una città che ti può sorprendere e intrattenere con una scena intrigante davanti a un capitello degli spiriti in un giardino, una situazione divertende in un autobus, un locale notturno grottesco, una deliziosa gita in barca sul fiume, cibo squisito comprato da un ambulante lungo un marciapiedi, una rissa paurosa o una protesta in piazza lunga un mese.

5. Cosa ti piace di meno della tua vita da espatriato?
Beh, alcune delle cose elencate sopra. Inoltre sembra esserci un muro invalicabile tra I thailandesi e gli stranieri: è molto difficile sentirsi completamente a casa propria qui, sempre che questo sia ciò che uno cerca. Per fortuna non è il mio caso.

6. Che cosa ti manca di più?
Incredibilmente non mi manca poi molto la cucina italiana. Beh magari un panino al formaggio e prosciutto con un bicchiere di vino ogni tanto...

A volte mi manca una bella conversazioni con qualche buon amico italiano, ma via internet ci si riesce comunque a tenere in contatto.

7. Che cosa hai fatto per incontrare nuova gente e integrarti nel nuovo paese?
Non è cerchi a tutti i costi di conoscere nuova gente. Di certo non come facevo quando ho cominciato a viaggiare. Ho notato che quello che mi affascinava delle persone che incontravo all'estero ora spesso mi annoia. Se incontro qualcuno che mi sembra interessante bene, altrimenti sono una persona molto indipendente, ho molti modi di impegnare il tempo libero e posso starmente tranquillamente da solo.

8. Quali usi e costumi del paese in cui vivi ti sembrano più strani?
Questa non è una domanda a cui è facile rispondere. Per farlo dovrei scrivere troppo e rischierei comunque di non affrontare il tema correttamente.

9. Qual è un mito da sfatare del paese in cui vivi?
Quello secondo cui tutti sorridono perché sono felici, ospitali e cordiali. Non fraintendetimi, la maggior parte delle volte lo sono, ma alcuni sorrisi qui hanno un significato più sottile.

10. Che consigli daresti agli altri espatriati?
In generale nessun consiglio. Ognuno cerchi di trovare la propria strada, sarà interessante e divertente. Ah, una cosa soltanto, mai e poi mai litigare con i thailandesi.

11. Quando e perché hai cominciato a tenere il blog?
Alcuni anni fa. Non lo feci semplicemente per tenere un diario. Cercavo un modo per tener traccia di quello che scrivevo quando ne valeva la pena.

12.  Che vantaggi ti ha portato il blog?
Non sono sicuro che abbia avuto dei vantaggi concreti, se non quello di aver fornito informazioni e storie a qualche lettore. Di sicuro però scriverlo è un'attività divertente, interessante e a volte impegnativa.

1. Why did you move abroad?
There is not a clear reason. It was an impulse, something quite irrational, I guess I did it out of curiosity and restlessness.

2. How do you make a living?
I teach some training courses on a free lance basis.  However, this is not a stable occupation.

3. How often do you communicate with home and how?
Once or twice a week, via MSN messenger, Skype or SMS.

4. What's your favorite thing about being an expat in Bangkok?
As I don't really have a stable job and I'm not even sure that I'll still be here next month - or next week for that matter – I don't really call myself an expat. Similarly I don't like to think of myself as a traveler, as I don't have much to share with people such as Marco Polo's or James Cook's lifestyles. I move around and live far from my country of birth most of my time because it feels good, like the right thing to do right now. I left, spent some time abroad and got used to it, but I might change my mind and go back to Italy any time.

Still, I must say that Bangkok is an interesting place. Despite it being noisy, chaotic, polluted and heavily trafficked, it is still a city that can surprise you and entertain you with an intriguing scene by a shrine in a garden, a funny situation on a city bus, a grotesque night club, a charming ride on a river boat, delicious and cheap street-food, a frightful fight or a massive month-long political demonstration.

5. What’s the worst thing about being an expat in Bangkok?
Well, some of the things listed above. Plus, there seems to be an insurmountable wall between the Thais and the foreigners here: it's very difficult to feel like you're completely at home, if that's what you're looking for.

Which I'm not, by the way.

6. What do you miss most?
Surprisingly enough I don't miss Italian food so much. Well, maybe a snack with some nice bread, cheese, ham and a glass of red wine now and then.

Sometimes I miss a nice conversation with my good Italian friends, but I can always catch up with them with the internet.

7. What did you do to meet people and integrate in your new home?
I don't really try too hard to meet new people. Not as hard as I used to when I started to move around at least. I noticed that what used to charm me about people that I met abroad years ago often bores me now. If I meet someone that I click with easily that's nice, otherwise I'm a very independent person, I have my ways to employ my free time and I can as well stay by myself.

8. What custom/ habits do you find most strange about your adopted culture?
That is not a very easy question to answer. It would take too long and I might not correctly address the issue.

9. What is a myth about your adopted country?
The one according to which everybody smiles because they are happy, welcoming and cheerful. I mean, most of the time they are but smiles here can have a more subtle meaning.

10. What advice would you give other expats?
In general, no particular advice. Find your own way around the country and its culture, it'll be interesting and fun.

Ah, just one thing: never, ever have serious arguments with the Thais.

11. When and why did you start your blog?
A few years back. I didn't do it with the intent to keep a journal. I was just looking for a way to keep track of what I was writing when it was worth it.

12.  How has the blog been beneficial?
I'm not sure that it has actually been beneficial, apart from providing some information and stories to a few readers. Writing it, though, is definitely a fun, interesting and sometimes a bit challenging kind of activity.
