Have registered to vote in European and municipal elections. As I have been out of the UK for over 15 years, I have no vote in the UK. I have recently come across a non-political initiative to obtain votes for EU citizens who are outside the State of which they hold the nationality (http://www.letmevote.eu). If successful, it would mean I could vote in general elections in France (where I work and pay taxes). I wonder if anyone has already signed. It seems to be a great idea.

There are several campaigns for voting rights and we talked about it in some articles on our Expat News blog:
    > The votes for expat brits campaign
    > Voting rights after moving abroad

As a EU member you are already lucky to have the vote in municipal and EU elections (in France the vote is denied for any other foreigner, even after dozen of years in the country, and the socialist promise to authorise this kind of vote is unlikely to happen any time soon as there is a strong opposition from a radical and conservative fringe of the population :( ).

Voting for general election poses another issue: MPs are not only making the day-to-day law that can affect all residents, they are also able to vote for war for example. And therefore the argument that only nationals can decide to go to war - not foreigners - makes sense.
There is always the possibility to ask for citizenship to get the voting rights.
